Lüdinghausen brings together a range of visitor interests: Vischering Castle is known for its castle history, exhibitions and events, while roses and fossils take centre stage in Seppenrade. The old town also has traces of its history to discover, as well as walks around Lüdinghausen Castle. If you are considering the town as a place to stay, you can plan your visit around these interests.

Vischering Castle: History and Events

Vischering Castle offers guided tours and changing art and cultural exhibitions. The permanent exhibition explores the history of the castle and its inhabitants, from its beginnings in the 13th century to the start of the 20th century. Events are held there regularly, including an annual knights’ camp. If your trip depends on a tour, exhibition or event, check availability and event dates in advance.

The castle offers a range of activities for families, schools and kindergartens. Primary-school-age children can explore the exhibition rooms independently with the help of a children’s guide. This specific option can be factored into plans with children; there are also activities for the groups mentioned.

Old Town and Paths Between the Castles

A walk through Lüdinghausen’s old town reveals traces of its history. Another recommended walk goes around the moat of Lüdinghausen Castle and through Parc de Taverny. The two walks have different focuses: one takes in the historic old town, the other the castle moat and Parc de Taverny.

The StadtLandschaft recreation area directly connects Vischering Castle and Lüdinghausen Castle, making it quick to get between them. The link between the two castles is therefore another local landmark to bear in mind when planning.

Rose Garden in Seppenrade

The rose garden in Seppenrade was established in 1968 on a former landfill site and is now home to more than 700 varieties of roses. The number of varieties may change. The garden combines a specific history with a diverse collection of roses.

At the entrance are casts of three ammonites found in Seppenrade. There is also a cast of what is described as the world’s largest ammonite: the giant fossil weighs 3.5 tonnes, is 1.74 metres high and 40 centimetres thick. The rose garden also has a boules court created by local volunteers, which is considered a popular meeting place.

In the Wider Destination of Coesfeld

A broader look at the destination of Coesfeld takes you to the district of Coesfeld, where an exceptionally high concentration of palaces, castles and historic manor houses characterises the region. In the town of Coesfeld, the Walkenbrückentor is a remnant of the town fortifications dating from the 14th century. It houses the town museum DAS TOR, which tells the story of Coesfeld’s past. DAS TOR is open Wednesdays from 4 to 7 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 5 pm. Check the opening times again before your visit.

The district of Coesfeld has an extensive network of several hundred kilometres of well-maintained cycling paths. These connect towns, municipalities and districts and run through the Münsterland park landscape. The junction network allows flexible route planning using numbered junctions and freely chosen number sequences. Check local route conditions before setting out, as signage and digital tools may be updated.
