A rare pneumatic organ and the church’s independent status give Völschow a clear cultural focus. Culture enthusiasts will find a combination of local history and a distinctive instrument here.

Church and Local History in Völschow

Völschow was first mentioned in a document in 1249. The village’s history also includes the independent status of its church: it was neither a branch church nor a parish church serving affiliated villages. Thus, the early mention provides a historical reference point, while the church’s status is another distinctive theme in the local history.

Völschow Church houses a rare pneumatic organ made in 1934 by the Barnim Grüneberg company of Stettin. Its construction, maker, origin and year give the instrument a distinctive identity. For travellers interested in church or organ history, it is a notable landmark in the village.

Older accounts of war also connect Völschow with the Battle of Völschow and describe the village as famous. A well-preserved knight’s sword is considered evidence of these events. Alongside the church history, this historical tradition places the village’s name in a broader context.

Jagetzow Chapel in the Associated Municipality

Jagetzow Chapel is located in the associated municipality. It is a small, simple half-timbered building dating from 1726, with a hipped roof. Inside, the ceiling is richly painted as a starry sky: Christ stands at the centre, surrounded by four angels playing trumpets. The modest building and the elaborate ceiling painting create contrasting impressions in the same structure.

Visitors can get the key to the chapel from the Neumann family in the village, at Dorfstraße 7. As this arrangement may change, please confirm it locally before your visit. This allows you to plan your chapel visit with the necessary arrangements in place.

Getting There by Bus

VVG route 336 serves a stop in Völschow on the Jarmen–Alt Tellin–Neu Buchholz route. The timetable was published in September 2025; check the current service before travelling. This gives you a specific bus connection to take into account when planning your journey.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as a Wider Travel Destination

Across the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald, other cultural, nature and activity-related themes can be found in different parts of the district. They complement Völschow’s local focus with distinct regional highlights, without replacing its local church history.

For cycling trips at district level, the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The Stettiner Haff Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism are also regional cycling routes for exploring the district. Check current route conditions and signage before setting out.

The region offers several different museum experiences. The Juliett U-461 is a museum in Peenemünde harbour and can be explored on a tour. Visitors can also book guided tours through the historic landscape via the Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum. As visiting and booking options may change, check them in advance.

In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is dedicated to the aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal; it is a technical museum focused on an individual. The two museums offer different perspectives: one features a cultural and historical object with a specific date, while the other explores a person and his many roles.

Nature and food also offer regional alternatives. The Ueckermünde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding. In Greifswald, a culinary tour takes you through the historic old town to four Greifswald restaurants serving sweet and savoury treats. This lets you choose activities across the wider destination according to your interests, rather than treating them as local sights.

A boat trip in Ukranenland Torgelow uses the first Slavic boat reconstructed in Germany; participants have to row themselves. This is an active way to explore and differs considerably from a museum tour. Another option in the district is to book guided tours through the historic landscape via the Peenemünde Historical Technical Museum; check current booking arrangements before making plans.
