Tutow can be discovered through its architecture and airfield history. The church and the housing estate showcase different architectural forms, while the history of the former airfield and the “Bunker Worlds” exhibition add another focus. Together, these topics offer a concrete picture of the town without reducing it to a single building or one period of its history.

Church and Architectural Styles in Tutow

The church in Tutow is a modern twelve-sided building made of white bricks and was inaugurated in 1991. Its shape, material and year of inauguration give it a clearly recognisable architectural profile. Its use is also shaped by the design of the space, which accommodates a range of events.

A different architectural scale can be seen in the housing estate of 13 semi-detached houses built close to the town centre. Its architecture is inspired by the Bauhaus style. The number of houses and the repeated semi-detached form set this example apart from the individual church building. Those interested in architecture can thus explore Tutow through two different forms: a distinctive religious building and an estate whose design draws on an architectural movement.

Airfield History and “Bunker Worlds”

By 1938, one of Germany’s largest airfields had been built in Tutow. This historical dimension provides an important backdrop to local memories of the airfield and the housing estate. It can be linked to the history of the Tutow GDR Museum, whose own location history also leads back to the airfield: before it moved, the museum was located at the edge of the airfield.

In 2010, the Tutow GDR Museum moved into the former cannery. The “Bunker Worlds” exhibition in Tutow’s current community centre brings historical details about the military airfield and the housing estate to life. A diorama depicts Tutow’s historic buildings. The exhibition therefore covers both the military-historical context and the development of the housing estate. If you would like to include it in your itinerary, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The museum’s move and the themes of the exhibition offer two different perspectives: the former places the museum’s previous location in its historical and geographical context, while the latter focuses on historical details and the building stock. Together with the church and the housing estate, they create a picture of the town in which architecture and history come together.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as a Regional Setting

In the broader travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald, the landscape is another focus alongside local history. The district’s three nature parks cover almost 40 per cent of its area. The Ueckermünde Heath is one example of outdoor activities, inviting visitors to hike, cycle and ride. These regional opportunities appeal to different interests from Tutow’s architectural and airfield history and can complement the choice of a destination based on your own priorities.

Vorpommern-Greifswald’s cultural attractions also offer their own highlights. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. The Juliett U-461 is a museum ship in Peenemünde harbour and can be explored on a tour. If you plan to visit the Juliett U-461, check the current visitor arrangements. The region therefore offers a range of distinct subjects alongside Tutow’s local history.
