Daberkow’s local history stretches from a medieval church to a find from the Nordic Bronze Age. In the municipality, Wietzow—with its manor house, park and art—provides another focal point. If you are interested in history and culture, it is worth distinguishing between the local connections: the church and Lure find belong to Daberkow, while the manor house and studio are in Wietzow.

Church and archaeological traces in Daberkow

The church in Daberkow was built in the 14th century; remains of the old fortified church tower are clearly visible. A pulpit altar from the 18th century complements the building. After a fire in 1816, the church was restored. Its construction date, tower remains, furnishings and restoration thus bring together several historical layers in a single building.

Visits to the church are possible by arrangement with the parish office. If the church is a fixed part of your day’s plans, arrange your visit with the parish office beforehand.

The Daberkow Lure find takes us further back in time: two musical instruments from the Nordic Bronze Age were found here in 1912. Alongside the history of a building, the find offers an archaeological perspective on the past of the place.

The Schlossberg and the motte also count among the traces of earlier life and activity here; pottery sherds from a medieval pottery workshop have also been found. These landscape features and finds add further clues about life in earlier Daberkow to the church’s history.

Manor house, park and art in Wietzow

Wietzow is a district of the municipality of Daberkow and an artists’ village in the Tollense Valley, on the River Tollense. Wietzow Manor House is a mansion remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style, first mentioned around 1620. A freestanding chapel complements the manor house and park ensemble.

After 1750, Karl Friedrich von Linden had an English landscape park laid out in Wietzow. The manor house park slopes down in terraces to the Tollense. Large bald cypresses, plane trees and pyramid oaks grow in the park. The park’s origins and its described terrain offer two different points of reference for understanding it.

Art is also part of Wietzow’s cultural character: Christina Rode’s dance-like, dreamlike sculptures are displayed in her bright studio and occasionally in the garden. The district’s range of attractions thus extends beyond the mansion and landscape park.

The municipality as a guide to your stay

The municipality of Daberkow comprises the districts of Daberkow, Hedwigshof and Wietzow. The municipality links the former north–south transport route B 96 with the Tollense Valley. When planning your visit, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the village of Daberkow and the attractions in Wietzow: the church, Lure find and local history of the former are set against the manor house, park and studio of the latter.

This helps you choose a destination that matches the themes you want to shape your stay.
