Neu Kosenow offers several ways to explore its architectural and village history. The churches invite visitors to compare different building styles and periods: from a complete interior painting with Art Nouveau elements to medieval fieldstone buildings. Kagendorf adds a historic village green and a cobblestone street to these architectural features. A visit therefore focuses not just on a single building, but also on how architecture and village layout tell different stories.

Churches from Fieldstone to Art Nouveau

The Church of St. Mary in Alt Kosenow features a very rare complete interior painting with Art Nouveau elements dating from 1904. It was created by Otto Bartelt of Berlin. This painting gives the church a different emphasis from the exterior architectural history of the churches in the area: here, a decorated interior provides the distinctive touch.

By contrast, the Church of St. Peter in Kagendorf is an elongated fieldstone building from the 13th century, constructed in several phases. The two churches can therefore be viewed through different features: in Alt Kosenow, the complete interior painting takes center stage; in Kagendorf, it is the fieldstone building and its construction in several phases. Those interested in historic churches will find two clearly distinct architectural themes here.

Architectural History in Auerose and Dargibell

Auerose Church is a plastered fieldstone building from the 15th century. Its half-timbered western tower dates from 1724. The von Borken family mausoleum was built as a cemetery chapel beside the east side of the church in 1898. It was built over an existing family crypt, which can still be entered. The church, chapel, and crypt are thus linked by a specific architectural relationship, while their respective functions and periods of construction remain distinct.

Dargibell Chapel is a rectangular fieldstone building from the 15th century that was altered in the Baroque period. After collapsing in 1941, it was rebuilt after 1960. Its history can be read as a sequence of different phases: medieval construction, later alteration, collapse, and reconstruction. This adds a different timeline to the architectural and church history of Auerose.

Village Layout in Kagendorf and Cycling Route Planning

Kagendorf became a museum village in the mid-1990s. The deciding factor was its unobstructed village green, with day laborers’ cottages and large farmers’ homesteads along a historic cobblestone street. The appeal described here lies in the village layout: the green, the different types of homesteads and houses, and the street form a whole. In addition to its individual churches, Kagendorf therefore offers another point of interest for anyone interested in historic settlement patterns.

For cycling route planning, a section along Federal Highway 109 is relevant: work to renew a cycling path section just under 3.3 kilometers long, from the edge of Ducherow to the DorfstraĂźe intersection in Neu Kosenow, began on April 24, 2024. This information describes when the renewal began; it does not indicate the current condition of the route. If you plan to ride this section, check the latest route conditions beforehand.

The Wider Travel Destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald

Beyond Neu Kosenow, the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald has its own cultural and natural attractions. Three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area. In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artifact from the Reformation period. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer, and humanist Otto Lilienthal, whose hometown was Anklam. These regional examples complement the picture of Neu Kosenow’s churches and village history, but are not local features of the town itself.
