Bugewitz combines hiking trails toward Anklamer Stadtbruch with the church’s architectural and organ history. These offer different focal points for planning your trip: you can make the landscape and its trails the centerpiece, or explore the history of the church and its organ. The routes also each have their own highlights, from a viewing tower to a bridge with information panels.
Hiking and Cycling at Anklamer Stadtbruch
From Bugewitz, a cycle path runs along the wetland areas of Anklamer Stadtbruch. Among the hiking routes, the “Viewing Tower at the Old Mühlgraben” trail offers a different landmark: it starts at a parking lot in Bugewitz and leads through the village and along the Old Mühlgraben to a viewing tower with lovely views of the Anklamer Stadtbruch nature reserve. There are benches and information panels nearby.
The “Anklamer Stadtbruch from Bugewitz” hike leads from Bugewitz along the Anklamer Mühlgraben into the nature reserve and follows a nature trail. It reaches a bridge with information panels about the protected area. This makes it easy to distinguish the two hiking routes: views and benches at the tower on one route, and a nature trail and bridge on the other. Check local trail conditions before setting out; trails and facilities may change.
Bugewitz Church and Its Organ
Bugewitz Church is a late medieval fieldstone building dating from the 15th century, and it took on its present form in 1718. Its mechanical slider-chest organ has its own history: B. Grüneberg built the instrument in Stettin in 1886; it was restored in 2011. The dates mark different stages: the 15th century for the church’s construction, 1718 for its present form, 1886 for the organ’s construction, and 2011 for its restoration. The history of the architecture and the instrument thus come together in one place.
Landscape and Regional Context
The vegetation of Anklamer Stadtbruch within the municipality is characterized by open water areas, reed beds, tall-sedge communities, and open swamp forests. These landscape types add another perspective on the region’s nature to the individual route destinations. Across the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel region, the three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area. The Ueckermünde Heath in the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald travel region is also ideal for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding.
Cultural destinations in Vorpommern-Greifswald also offer a different perspective on the region. The Otto Lilienthal Museum in Anklam is a technical museum dedicated to the pioneering aviator, mechanical engineer, and humanist Otto Lilienthal, whose hometown was Anklam. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the 1554 Croy Tapestry, a unique cultural and historical artifact from the Reformation era. These regional examples complement Bugewitz’s local highlights—its hiking trails and church—without detracting from the distinctive features of the village.
