Blesewitz is a municipality near Anklam in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The church reveals several building periods: the rendered fieldstone building dates from the 15th century, while the set-back rectangular chancel dates from the 14th century. Blesewitz lies north of federal highway B 197 and south of B 199. Anklam is about seven kilometres to the northeast. You can reach the A20 via the Anklam junction, about 20 kilometres away.

Church Architecture and Furnishings

The older chancel and the later fieldstone building reveal different construction phases of Blesewitz church. The half-timbered tower at the west end belongs to another period: it probably dates from the 18th century. The tower’s date is therefore less certain than the dating of the chancel and main building.

The furnishings include a pulpit with Renaissance-style balustrades, dating from 1613. Three 19th-century granite grave steles stand in front of the east wall. The architecture, furnishings and gravestones offer different points of connection to the village’s history—from the older chancel to the distinctly later steles. Particularly interested in architecture? At the church, several periods and styles can be distinguished, rather than assigning the building to a single era.

Manor House and Estate History

Until it was sold in 1792, Blesewitz was a fief held by the von Lüskow family, who had lived here since the 14th century. The Kolbe family acquired the estate in 1824. They farmed the 865-hectare estate until the end of the Second World War. This sequence—from the von Lüskow family, through the sale, to the Kolbes’ acquisition—forms a second historical focus alongside the church.

After 1945, the manor house served as a residence, inn and cultural centre. It has stood empty for many years; check its current condition and whether access is possible before visiting. Some of the estate’s farm buildings have been preserved and are partly in use. The buildings described today are therefore in different situations: the manor house is vacant, while some of the farm buildings have been preserved and are partly in use.

Cycling Through Blesewitz

The cycling stage from Friedland to Anklam passes through Blesewitz and Butzow. The landscape along the route is shaped by agriculture and wide-open fields. The stage offers a different focus from the church and estate history: it places Blesewitz on a route between the two named places.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as a Wider Travel Destination

In the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald, three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district. Cultural attractions offer a different selection from the local architectural and estate history: the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era.

In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal. It is a technical museum dedicated to a notable individual in his home town. For a broader travel decision, the local history of Blesewitz and the expressly named cultural attractions across the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald destination can be considered side by side.

Plan Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: would you like to centre your trip on Blesewitz’s church and estate history, or also include attractions across the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald destination? The Friedland–Anklam cycling stage is a specific activity that passes through Blesewitz; the museums mentioned are in Anklam and Greifswald. This lets you treat the village itself and the broader regional selection as different focuses for your trip.
