Krien’s village church is an important example of North German Brick Gothic architecture, as highlighted in a description published in 2025. Several historic features take centre stage, including the pulpit, bell and baptismal font; at the edge of the church and cemetery, a memorial commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War. Krien therefore has a particular focus on architectural and commemorative culture.

Church, furnishings and memorial site

The pulpit dates from the Renaissance and is dated 1602. The church’s inventory also includes a bell from the 15th century, considered particularly valuable. The baptismal font is also part of the church’s furnishings; it is probably very old. The three items offer different historical points of reference: a precisely dated pulpit, a medieval bell and a baptismal font whose age can only be estimated with reservations.

The memorial at the edge of the village church and cemetery commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War. Krien’s war memorial is designed as a classic obelisk. A three-step stone staircase leads from the road to the memorial. Check current access arrangements before your visit.

Community life and getting around

For 2026: People who are not members of the church are also welcome to join the “Kraftquelle” discussion group. The group usually meets on Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Krien community centre, Rundstraße 59. Check the current schedule before your visit.

Wegezin is important for finding your way around the municipality: the district of Wegezin in the municipality of Krien is connected to Anklam by the nearby B199 federal road. From Wegezin, the B199 continues to the A20 motorway. Check current road conditions before travelling.

In the wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald

The wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers further opportunities to explore landscapes and cycling routes. The UeckermĂĽnde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through the district. The Stettin Lagoon Circular Route and the Northern German Romanticism Route are among the regional cycle routes for exploring the district. When planning a specific route, check current signposting and trail conditions.

The cultural attractions in the wider destination also vary considerably. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal in his home town. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. A culinary tour of Greifswald’s historic old town takes visitors to four Greifswald restaurants serving sweet and savoury treats.

The Juliett U-461 is moored in PeenemĂĽnde harbour as a museum and can be explored on a tour. Visitors can book guided tours of the memorial landscape through the PeenemĂĽnde Historical Technical Museum. Check current access and booking conditions in advance.

A different kind of participation is offered by a boat trip in Ukranenland Torgelow: it uses the first Slavic boat reconstructed in Germany, and participants have to row themselves. Take this active requirement into account when planning.

If you are looking for a hotel in Krien, base your choice on whether you want the local church and memorial culture to shape your stay, or whether you would also like to include destinations in the wider area of Vorpommern-Greifswald.
