Wulkenzin connects routes to Lake Tollensesee with a distinctive church and a cycle route section within the municipality. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping three questions separate: Where do the paths lead from the village, what characterises the local section of the cycle route, and when is Camping Gatsch Eck open for the season? Tollense Court adds another sporting option in the village.

Forest Paths, Lake and Season

Camping Gatsch Eck is nestled in Brodaer Holz, right on Lake Tollensesee. It is open each year from 1 April to 31 October. Check these dates again before your trip.

Brodaer Holz, a varied woodland with beech and oak trees close to the lake, lies near Wulkenzin. Numerous forest paths lead from the village of Wulkenzin to the western shore of Lake Tollensesee, about 2 km away. These are two different reference points for finding your way: Gatsch Eck is right by the lake, while the paths from the village lead to the western shore.

Cycling: The Circular Route and the Local Section

The Lake Tollensesee cycle route is 35 km long and hilly. It runs along well-gravelled or paved paths and, in places, quiet side roads. Surfaces and route conditions can change, so check the current conditions before setting off.

A report from 2026 describes the Gatscher Weg in the municipality, running alongside the lake to Camping Gatsch Eck. According to the report, cyclists currently have to use the unpaved summer path there. The circular route’s particular importance for regional and supraregional cycle network connections applies to the route as a whole. For planning purposes, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the general information about the circular route and the specific path conditions on the Gatscher Weg.

Wulkenzin Church: Architecture and Furnishings

Wulkenzin Church is a rectangular brick hall built on a fieldstone base. Its polygonal chancel and projecting tower complete the basic design. Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, building councillor to the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and a pupil of Schinkel, built the church in 1830–31. The altar area is at the west end rather than, as is usual, the east.

Nine small painted panes in the apse windows depict different scenes and come from the previous church. Many bear the year 1695. The organ also has its own history: Ernst Sauer originally made it in 1839 for the teacher training college in Mirow. In 1887, Edmund Bruder moved it from Wismar to Wulkenzin. Wulkenzin was a parish centre from an early date.

The dates put the details in chronological order: the painted panes come from the previous church, the present building was constructed in 1830–31, and the organ was added in 1839. This makes it possible to consider the church’s architectural history and furnishings as distinct yet interconnected aspects.

Sports in the Village

Tollense Court in Wulkenzin offers tennis, badminton and squash. This adds another kind of activity in the village alongside the forest and cycling routes. Individual offerings may change; check what is currently available before visiting.
