The village church is a specific cultural landmark in Neuenkirchen: it was built in the 14th century. On the Staven–Neubrandenburg section of the Mecklenburg Lake District Pilgrimage Route, you reach the church after 4.4 km. This brings a historic building together with a clearly defined route—a good starting point if you would like to plan your stay around culture and walking routes.

Village Church, Pilgrimage Route and Cycle Path

The pilgrimage route also leads to special places along the way. Beyond the barrier-protected railway crossing, the route passes the secluded ruins of KĂĽssow Church, described as a special place to linger. The pilgrimage route follows the cycle path through the Datzetal; the small river is barely visible. The route therefore combines stretches of the journey with different impressions: the church and the ruins on the one hand, and a valley where the water is barely visible on the other.

For cyclists, the link between Ihlenfeld and Neuenkirchen is another specific point of reference: a new cycle path was officially opened there. After about 350 m along the road to Warlin, the route reaches the Mecklenburg Lake District Cycle Route. As current trail conditions may affect the pilgrimage route, and maintenance work or diversions may affect the cycle path, check the conditions of each route before setting out.

Historic Features in Ihlenfeld

Ihlenfeld, which is part of the municipality of Neuenkirchen, also offers historic architectural and local features. In Ihlenfeld village church, the pulpit, pews, baptismal font, west gallery with its Grüneberg organ, and patron’s box with the von Michael coat of arms date from 1910. The rectangular estate farm was built in the 18th and 19th centuries. A few historic houses have also been preserved in the old village centre. The village church, estate farm and historic houses are in Ihlenfeld, not in the village of Neuenkirchen.

Planning Your Stay and Arrival

When looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether the village church on the pilgrimage route, the cycle link between Ihlenfeld and Neuenkirchen, or a broader regional focus is more important for your trip. For your journey, note that Neuenkirchen railway station is closed. Do not plan to use it as an active railway station.

The Mecklenburg Lake District as a Broader Setting

Beyond the specific local and route connections, the Mecklenburg Lake District offers a regional perspective of its own. MĂĽritz National Park is part of this region and is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and wide meadows. The MĂĽritz National Park Hiking Trail takes nine stages through a variety of landscapes: along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and as far as the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest at Serrahn and tours from the water.

Another regional nature attraction is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, within Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park and the Mecklenburg Lake District. Visitors can observe bison there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an anthill house, an exhibition with tactile and visual information panels, and a dendrophone. These nature attractions are explicitly located in the wider region and complement the picture of Neuenkirchen without being confused with local points along the route.
