Schöppenstedt can be explored through two distinctive themes: the traces of Till Eulenspiegel and historic buildings such as the leaning tower of St. Stephen’s Church. There is also a 50 km cycling route that starts in the town. If you are planning a stay, you can weigh up culture, architecture and this specific route option as different focal points.

Till Eulenspiegel in the Museum and Around Town

The Till Eulenspiegel Museum tells the story of the life and work of the famous trickster figure through historical exhibits and interactive elements. The museum also offers a tour of the town centre introducing the traces Till Eulenspiegel left in the town. This gives you two distinct ways to explore: the exhibition focuses on the figure, while the tour follows his traces around town. The museum recommends that groups book guided tours in advance.

A notice from 2024 reported that visitors could get free information about the region in the museum foyer. If you are planning to use this for orientation, check in advance whether it is still available.

Church, Half-Timbered House and Blacksmithing

St. Stephen’s Church is known for its leaning tower. Directly behind the church, not far from the market square, stands a renovated half-timbered house, a cultural monument dating from 1612. In the tower museum at St. Stephen’s Church, the Old Smithy displays historical tools and examples of blacksmithing. If you are choosing what to visit based on your interests, the distinction is clear: the church and half-timbered house represent architecture and a specific building date, while the smithy offers traces of historic craftsmanship. If you would like to visit the Old Smithy, check the visiting arrangements in advance.
