Lucklum Manor Estate is privately owned. The courtyard café area in the farmyard, the Linden Avenue and the estate church are open to the public; the estate park and the Knights’ Hall open only on special occasions. Plan visits to the park or Knights’ Hall accordingly.

Manor Estate and Local History

Lucklum Manor Estate dates back to the Teutonic Order. In the Middle Ages, Lucklum was an important religious and economic centre due to its location on the trade route between Magdeburg and Hildesheim. Lucklum is also a pilgrimage destination on the Braunschweig Way of St James; the former commandery of the Teutonic Order and its church are among the defining historic features of this pilgrimage destination. The trade route and pilgrimage route represent two distinct connections: one reflects Lucklum’s medieval religious and economic importance, while the other identifies the village as a place of pilgrimage.

The Lucklum estate complex in the wider destination of Erkerode comprises a manor house, a church, agricultural buildings, stables and a landscaped park.

Linden Avenue and Art Along the Pilgrimage Route

The 200-year-old, four-row Linden Avenue was fully renovated and officially opened in summer 2018. In 2019, small squares and seating areas for visitors and passers-by were created along the avenue. At the end of Linden Avenue stands a three-metre-high wooden head of Christ. Since 2019, pilgrimage-route sculptures by Braunschweig sculptor Magnus Kleine Tebbe have lined the pilgrimage route around the manor estate. The avenue and the sculptures offer distinct features: a historic tree-lined avenue and art along the pilgrimage route.

Walking and Route Information

The Elm Destination Hiking Trail 3 (Lucklum–Erkerode–Eilumer Horn) starts at Lucklum Manor Estate and covers 6.4 km with 230 metres of elevation gain on the outward leg. These figures answer different planning questions: the distance gives the route length, while the elevation figure refers specifically to the outward leg. This lets you assess distance and ascent separately. A bridge over the Wabe was also built east of the Steinmühle in Lucklum.

The two route connections can be distinguished: the sculptures line the pilgrimage route around the manor estate; Elm Destination Hiking Trail 3 has a named starting point at the manor estate and published route figures. This makes clear which details relate to each route.

Erkerode in Its Regional Context

In the wider destination of Erkerode, Lucklum lies on the western slope of the Elm hills. The village, characterised by avenues and old trees, is a gateway to the Reitlingstal recreation and hiking area. The village church in Erkerode itself has a Baroque organ dating from 1747, made by Johann Christoph Zuberbier of Dessau. The stained-glass windows in the apse depict the story of the Prodigal Son. The organ and windows reveal two distinct aspects of the church: a Baroque instrument with a named maker and a pictorial depiction of a biblical story. Occasional three-sided farmsteads can be found in Erkerode; these are known as the “Erkerode type”.
