The Wabe flows through Sickte, and cultural offerings range from exhibitions at the manor house to art in Sickte-Neuerkerode. The area also has historic sites in several parts of the municipality and further destinations in the Sickte collective municipality. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first deciding whether to focus on culture, local history, or nature and swimming experiences.

Culture at the Manor House and in Neuerkerode

At Sickte Manor House, the Sickter Kulturinitiative SIKKI organises exhibitions and workshops in the staircase gallery. The programme may change. Readings, concerts and exhibitions are also held in the manor house’s Knights’ Hall; civil wedding ceremonies take place there as well. If you are planning a ceremony, confirm the details in advance.

In Sickte-Neuerkerode, Villa Luise works with drawing, painting, ceramics, performance and installation. It presents art in exhibitions and at events, and sells works on site. Meetings with artists, studio visits and gallery tours are available on request. Check visiting arrangements and opening details in advance.

The Church of Peter and Paul in Sickte-Neuerkerode also contributes to local cultural life. It hosts church services, devotions, occasional music events and traditional activities throughout the church year. The religious programme depends on the calendar and the congregation. Another local tradition is the raising of the maypole; dates vary from year to year.

Local History at Different Sites

The Königsfriedhof, on the boundary between Niedersickte and Volzum, is considered a visible witness to history. In Obersickte, a gallery runs around the buildings of an open quadrangle at a historic farmstead. Also in Obersickte, justice was administered for centuries at the former site of the Kalandslinde. These places offer different points of entry into the history of the area.

The Wabe also connects Sickte with its milling history. Historically, the river powered the Güntersche Erb-Öl- und Walkmühle, the Erbenzinsmühle and the Bergmannsche Papiermühle, all associated with Sickte. This is a reference to the Wabe’s former use: these mills should be understood as historic sites, not as present-day attractions.

Swimming and Hiking in the Sickte Collective Municipality

Sickte outdoor pool has a 25-metre swimming and diving pool with a three-metre diving tower, a one-metre diving board and starting blocks. Facilities also include a children’s paddling pool, a non-swimmer pool with an 80-metre water slide, a volleyball net and extensive sunbathing lawns. Facilities and operations may change, so check that the pool is open before visiting.

Further destinations for scenery and history lie in the Sickte collective municipality, but outside the village of Sickte. Eilumer Horn, in the Eilumer Forst above Evessen and Ampleben, is the highest point in the Elm at 323.30 metres. Hikes towards the hill can start at a car park above the Evessen allotment-garden settlement; an information board there points out hiking and circular trails. Evessen is also home to Evesser Hoch, an Early Bronze Age princely tomb beside the main road.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Sickte, you can first decide which of these themes you want your trip to focus on: culture and history in the village, or additional destinations in the collective municipality. Bear in mind when planning that sites and activities have different conditions: events change, visits to Villa Luise are available on request, and the current operation of the outdoor pool should be checked in advance.
