Dettum’s smock mill is the town’s landmark, complemented by a cultural centre and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool. This offers a range of interests to consider when planning your trip: a distinctive building, art and culture, or swimming facilities. Dettum is close to the Altenau. The wider Wolfenbüttel travel destination also offers its own landscape and cultural themes.
Smock Mill and Cultural Centre
The smock mill was built in 1863 and is considered an industrial monument. Access to the mill grounds is via a bridge over the Beeke, leading directly onto the site. Check this access route before you travel. This lets you plan a visit to the windmill as a focus in its own right while also taking the specific access route into account.
Dettum Cultural Centre comprises two buildings where visitors can experience, explore, create and present art and culture. These different activities combine encounters with art and culture with hands-on creativity and presentation. The focus is therefore not only on viewing, but also on exploring and making.
Outdoor Swimming Pool and Trails
Dettum outdoor swimming pool has separate areas for swimmers and non-swimmers, a 3-metre diving tower, a 1-metre diving board and starting blocks. There is a paddling pool with a fountain for small children. The facilities therefore cater to different types of swimming. The pool is seasonal, and operating arrangements may change. Check the latest operating information before your visit.
Historically, the Dettumer Bruch extended from Ahlum to Dettum. Together with Dettum’s location near the Altenau, this former extent of the landscape offers another perspective on the town. A short section of the route to Vilgensee between Ahlum and Dettum was also improved in 2022. If you are planning a hike, check the current trail conditions.
In the Wider WolfenbĂĽttel Travel Destination
Elm-Lappwald Nature Park lies in the districts of WolfenbĂĽttel and Helmstedt and covers 470 square kilometres. Its landscapes include extensive forests, valleys, protected wetlands, heathland, spring-fed rivers and small lakes. The network of hiking trails covers around 500 kilometres, with signposted circular routes, car parks and shelters. The nature park invites visitors to hike, cycle and explore away from main roads. If you are taking these themes into account when planning, check the latest trail conditions.
The town of Wolfenbüttel also offers its own cultural and historical highlights: its historic half-timbered old town has around 1,000 half-timbered houses. Wolfenbüttel Castle is the second-largest castle in Lower Saxony and developed from a medieval moated castle. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing lived in Lessing House in Wolfenbüttel from 1777 to 1781. The old town, castle history and literary history offer a different focus from the wider destination’s landscape themes. The Eulenspiegel autoroute links Braunschweig, Wolfenbüttel, Schöppenstedt and Helmstedt over about 170 kilometres; route conditions may change.
