A farmstead turned open-air museum, three reconstructed longhouses and northern Germany’s largest contiguous mixed forest show how many different ways there are to explore Lüchow-Dannenberg. Traditional crafts, early history, art and nature each offer a different focus.

Crafts, archaeology and exhibitions

In the Rundlingsdorf village of Lübeln, the Rundlingsmuseum Wendland features a farmstead as an open-air museum. Traditional crafts are brought to life in the pottery, blacksmith’s workshop, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop.

The Hitzacker Archaeological Centre is an open-air museum on a site that people were already using around 4,000 years ago. Three reconstructed longhouses and numerous interactive stations give visitors a glimpse into the everyday lives of early people. The appeal lies not only in the reconstructions, but also in the site’s historical context. The centre offers cyclists lockable bike boxes, luggage storage and an e-bike charging station. Check the availability of these visitor facilities before your trip.

The Waldemarturm Dannenberg displays finds and exhibits from the city’s early history across several floors, along with changing art exhibitions and a permanent exhibition on flooding. The focus is different in Wustrow: its museum is housed in the elegant residence of merchant Wilhelm Lüring, built in the late 19th century. Its changing exhibitions explore the more recent history of the Wendland, as well as social, political and economic history.

Explore forests and trails

The Göhrde is northern Germany’s largest contiguous mixed forest. With its many protected areas, the Göhrde forest provides a habitat for numerous rare and endangered species. The Naturum Göhrde offers forest experiences and guided walks on various themes by request; offerings may change.

Lake Thielenburger See lies close to Dannenberg’s town centre, where visitors can enjoy long walks at any time of year. The border and nature trail from Schnackenburg to Gartow offers a different way to experience nature: ten information boards explain local habitats and wildlife, while two viewing platforms provide an unobstructed view of the area. The lake is therefore well suited to a long walk, while the trail also provides information about habitats and species.

Kulturelle Landpartie and cycling tours

Since 1989, artists and craftspeople have opened the gates to their farms and studios every year between Ascension Day and Pentecost as part of the Kulturelle Landpartie, presenting their work over twelve days. Exact dates vary from year to year.

During the Kulturelle Landpartie, visitors can follow suggested cycling routes to reach numerous exhibitions and theatre performances. The routes and programme vary from year to year.

The options differ considerably when it comes to timing: long walks around Lake Thielenburger See are possible year-round, while the Naturum’s forest programmes take place by request and the Kulturelle Landpartie has different dates each year. If one of these experiences is a key part of your trip, check the relevant edition or confirm the programme you want in advance.
