The Jeetzel flows through the half-timbered town of Lüchow. Those interested in the town’s history will find a broad historical overview at the Amtsturm Museum: it documents more than 1,000 years of Lüchow’s history, from the beginnings of Slavic settlement through the Middle Ages to the fire of 1811. The museum is spread across two buildings less than 50 metres apart. The newer building also houses the Lüchow Tourist Information Office.

Town History, Churches and Public Art

The churches also offer different architectural and historical highlights. St. Johannis Church is the older of the two notable church buildings in Lüchow. The Gothic brick building has a stepped gable with plaster panels on its west side. St. Agnes Church was built in 1913/1914. On the market square, a fountain features a historic depiction of two linen weavers.

Another cultural theme in Lüchow is the musical history of the Rolling Stones. The Stones Fan Museum displays exhibits about the band and its former members across around 1,000 square metres. A 34-metre-long mural in Gartenstraße also depicts key moments in the band’s history. It was created in 2012 to mark the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary. The same subject is thus presented in two different forms: as museum exhibits and as a mural.

Seasonal Reasons to Visit

Lüchow’s town festival traditionally takes place every year on the third Saturday in August and offers a family programme in the town centre. A rare handkerchief tree stands in the Amtsgarten, usually in full bloom in May, and is a popular photo subject. These two details mark different times of year: the usual flowering period in May and the festival traditionally held in August. If you are planning your trip around the town festival, check that year’s programme in advance.

More to Explore in the Wider Lüchow-Dannenberg Destination

In the wider Lüchow-Dannenberg destination, the Kulturelle Landpartie brings art and crafts together during a recurring event period. Since 1989, artists and craftspeople have opened their farmyards and studios every year between Ascension Day and Pentecost, presenting their work over twelve days. The exact dates vary from year to year. During the Kulturelle Landpartie, visitors can follow suggested cycling routes to reach numerous exhibitions and theatre performances. The programme and routes differ each year.

The Wendland Round Barn Museum in Lübeln is an open-air museum centred on a farmstead. Traditional crafts are brought to life in its pottery, forge, bakehouse and wheelwright’s workshop. The Hitzacker Archaeological Centre is also an open-air museum: people were already using its grounds around 4,000 years ago. Three reconstructed longhouses and numerous interactive stations give visitors a glimpse into the everyday lives of people in the past. The two museums offer different perspectives: traditional crafts at one, and reconstructions and experiences exploring early history at the other.

Landscape and nature experiences are also part of the wider Lüchow-Dannenberg destination. The Göhrde is the largest contiguous mixed forest area in northern Germany. With its many protected areas, the Göhrde Forest provides a habitat for numerous rare and endangered species. The Naturum Göhrde offers forest activity programmes and guided walks on various themes on request; check what is currently available before making plans. Along the border and nature trail from Schnackenburg to Gartow, ten information boards explain habitats and the local flora and fauna. Two viewing platforms offer unobstructed views across the area.
