North of Leisten lies the 480-hectare Schnegaer MĂĽhlenbachtal Nature Reserve. In the village itself, a historic residential and agricultural building dating from 1840 is listed as a historic monument. Together with its agricultural character, these features offer different points of reference for understanding Leisten and the broader travel destination of Schnega.

Rural Character and Nature Reserve

Leisten has retained its predominantly agricultural character. The village’s land area covers 239 hectares, of which 210 hectares were used for agriculture in 2004.

North of the village, the Schnegaer Mühlenbachtal Nature Reserve runs along the Schnegaer Mühlengraben. It covers 480 hectares. At the level of the municipality to which it belongs, the nature reserve overlaps with the “Landgraben und Dummeniederung” Special Area of Conservation.

The Schnegaer MĂĽhlbach in Schnega

In the broader travel destination of Schnega, much of the Schnegaer MĂĽhlbach remains in a natural state and has not been channelled. In Schnega, the nature reserve in the valley is limited to the stream and a narrow strip of riverbank. This describes the landscape in Schnega; the location of the 480-hectare nature reserve north of Leisten should be considered separately.

Historic Monument at House Number 8

The historic residential and agricultural building at house number 8 in Leisten is listed as a historic monument and was built in 1840. It is a four-post farmhouse with a projecting porch, brick infill walls and a gabled roof. If you are interested in historic architecture, this house provides a specific local point of reference without requiring a general overview of architectural history.

Routes in the Municipality and in Schnega

The signposted Grenzland Tour is 29 kilometres long. In the broader travel destination of Schnega, it follows a short section of the former inner German border, passing through several small villages as well as Schnega and Bergen. Its connection to the border, its length and the places it passes give the tour a distinctive character. The route description thus links a historic landscape with a route through several places.

The Swinmark Tour is a 26-kilometre cycling route that starts at Schnega railway station. These are two different points of reference: the Grenzland Tour is signposted and follows the former border; for the Swinmark Tour, the cycling route and its starting point at the railway station are specified. The routes are 29 and 26 kilometres long, respectively.

Agriculture as a Historical Event Theme

At the “Höfe und Stationen DAN 2019” event, there was a station about arable farming in the fields between Leisten and Schnega railway station. René Sasse and his father ran the arable farm; its main crops included potatoes, winter wheat, rapeseed and sugar beet. Using agricultural machinery, the Sasse family demonstrated the efficiency of irrigation and fertilisation. In 2019, the station focused on arable farming, agricultural machinery and field cultivation.
