Sensbacher Höhe offers several distinctive points of interest for a stay: a cross-country ski trail, a viewpoint and the small forest cemetery. There are also winter hikes with different starting points and a cycling tour through Sensbachtal. If you want to plan varied days, you can choose between outdoor activities and historic buildings. The main considerations are the different route formats: a moderately difficult cycling tour, a ski trail with two stated lengths, and hikes, one of which is not a circular route while another can be walked as a circular route.
Hiking, Cycling and Views
The Sensbachtal Panorama Trail is one of the certified circular hiking trails in Oberzent. The area also has hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging, leading through forested ridges and deep valleys. This range provides a guide when you want to factor the difficulty of your hike into your daily plans. There is also a viewpoint on the ridge of Sensbacher Höhe, which is recommended for a visit.
For cyclists, the Oberzent Loop through Sensbachtal is a moderately difficult option: it covers 28 kilometres and has 530 metres of elevation gain. The distance, elevation gain and difficulty level give you specific points of comparison with other plans. It remains a clearly defined tour in its own right, while the hiking trails in Oberzent cater to different ability levels.
Winter Trails with Different Route Formats
A cross-country ski trail runs along the ridge of Sensbacher Höhe, north of the Sensbacher forest cemetery. It starts at the “Sensbacher Höhe” nature car park, 520 metres above sea level; a waxing and changing hut is available there. The northern trail is 4.5 kilometres long. The Höhfeld Loop extends it to 5.6 kilometres. This lets you compare the two stated route lengths when planning.
The winter hikes also differ in format. One starts at the “Sensbacher Höhe” nature car park, is 2.8 kilometres one way and is not a circular route. Another starts at the “Mühs” nature car park in the Ober-Sensbach district and can be walked as a circular route. So, as well as distance, the route format matters when choosing: the hike from “Mühs” can be done as a loop, while the route from Sensbacher Höhe is explicitly not a circular route.
Forest Cemetery and Late Baroque Architectural History
The small forest cemetery on Sensbacher Höhe is considered worth seeing and is located on the road to Beerfelden. It was established at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War; the year 1619 is inscribed on the entrance arch. The cemetery is also home to the crypt of the House of Erbach-Fürstenau. The cemetery chapel acquired its present form through a renovation in 1744. The cemetery, crypt and chapel therefore offer different points of historical interest in one place.
Hunting Lodge Krähberg offers another glimpse into architectural history. It is a regularly laid-out late Baroque building complex commissioned by Count Albert of Erbach-Fürstenau and built from 1761 to 1771. The dates mark different historical contexts: 1619 for the establishment of the cemetery, 1744 for the chapel renovation, and 1761 to 1771 for the construction of the hunting lodge. If you are interested in architecture and history, you can include these subjects in your travel plans alongside the hiking and winter activities.
