Bad König is the only spa town in the Odenwald district. For planning, two distinct highlights can be considered side by side: the spa park, with its water and exercise facilities, and the historic town center around Palace Square. The park focuses on lakes, paths and recreational facilities, while the Old Palace and Georg Vetter Path offer different ways to explore local history. You can shape your stay around whether you would rather spend time in green surroundings or focus on historic sites.

Spa Park: Lakes, Paths and Recreational Facilities

Bad König Spa Park has two lakes, a water playground, a balancing course and a footbath. There is also a planetary path, sundials and water fountains. By the Small Lake in the eastern part of the Great Spa Park, you’ll find an 18-hole mini-golf course, outdoor chess, a bocce court and a Kneipp facility. The park offers a variety of ways to exercise, play and enjoy the outdoors.

The paths around the lakes are lit, and you can walk or jog there until 10 p.m. If you are planning your visit around a particular facility or an evening visit, check the current conditions in advance: park facilities, lighting and hours may change.

Palace Square and the Historic Town Center

The Old Palace dates back to 1559. With its broad façade and many bays, as well as its size, it dominates Palace Square; it stands on higher ground at the square’s southern end. The building was the former residence of the Counts of Erbach-Schönberg. Its former role as a residence, striking façade and position on the square give the palace a special place in the historic town center.

The historic town center also includes the palaces, the pleasure garden, the palace church, the rent office and the open-air theater. The ground floor of the Old Palace houses two exhibition rooms belonging to the local history museum. If you are planning a museum visit, check current access arrangements in advance. The open-air theater has been part of the historic town center since 1985 and hosts outdoor events. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance, check the latest dates in good time.

Georg Vetter Path and Town Tour

The Georg Vetter Path begins right by the Georg Vetter Museum and leads out of town between gardens and meadows to the cemetery. There you’ll find the centuries-old cemetery chapel, which Georg Vetter often used as a subject for his artwork. The path thus combines a route into the countryside with a direct connection to the artist’s subjects. Check the conditions on site before setting out.

A leisurely guided tour of Bad König accommodates people who have difficulty walking, as well as participants using a walker, wheelchair or cane; everyone else is welcome too. If you are planning this tour, confirm the specific arrangements and accessibility details with the guide in advance.

Getting Here by Train

Bad König is served by the Odenwald Railway. The walk from the station to Palace Square is about 800 meters. Check current train connections before your trip; the distance is a guide to the walk between the station and Palace Square.
