The digital Bannoser Trail starts at the Old Post Office in Brensbach and is designed as a circular route of approximately 20 km. It leads through forests with distant views before returning to the starting point. Shortcuts let you choose the route length freely, so you can decide during planning between the full loop and a shorter option.

The Bannoser and His Legacy

At several prominent points, the Bannoser Trail is marked with a top hat. At stations along the Bannoser circular trail, information boards tell stories about Bannoser’s pranks. The figure is based on Johann Heinrich Ritter: the master shoemaker was born in Brensbach in 1807 and was known as “Bannoser.” His pranks made him famous far beyond the boundaries of the municipality.

Ritter was also commemorated in literature. Local poet Karl Schäfer, a contemporary of Ritter, dedicated the novel “Eulenspiegel im Odenwald” to him. The Bannoser story therefore centers on a real person: his nickname, his pranks and the literary remembrance that followed.

Traces of Local History

The Brensbach Historic Town Trail leads through the town, with information boards at its stops sharing insights into its history. The route highlights surviving buildings and objects that are significant to the town’s history. It thus draws attention to historical traces throughout the town, rather than just to one person.

Another historical landmark is Kirchhügel (Church Hill): a low, walled mound where the road from Höchst meets the village’s main thoroughfare. It is considered the settlement’s original nucleus. The description thus identifies both a specific location in the town and its significance to the history of its settlement.

Cycling Route and Views

The R9 cycle route runs from the Rhine at Worms to Obernburg on the Main. In the Gersprenz Valley, it passes through Reichelsheim to Brensbach and continues via Wallbach to Höchst. Unlike the Bannoser Trail, which is a circular route, the R9 continues beyond Brensbach. Check the current route conditions before setting out.

Wallbach’s Vogelherd viewpoint on the B3 panoramic trail offers a different perspective: from there, the view stretches to Brensbach and, in good visibility, as far as Frankfurt. The panoramic trail descends to the Eberhardtsbrunnen spring and its shelter, then passes Hinterwald pond and returns to the car park. The viewpoint and route can therefore be considered as different aspects of this trail.

Another Historic Site in the Odenwald

Breuberg Castle is another historic landmark in the Odenwald. It has a history spanning more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. The Breuberg Museum is located in the castle. If you are planning a visit, check current visitor information in advance.

Choosing a Route and Finding a Hotel

If you are looking for a hotel in Brensbach, first consider the difference between a stay focused on local history and a longer bike ride: the Bannoser Trail returns to its starting point, while the R9 passes through Brensbach and continues beyond the town. Tailor your search to the focus you have planned for your stay.
