Rothenberg is best explored through two themes: water as a foundation of life and the technology used to supply it. The Rothenberg Geopark Trail brings the subject of water to life; there are also traces of local history and hiking options with different focuses. When planning, you can choose between a themed trail, a circular hike, historic technology, and a cross-country skiing option that depends on winter conditions. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to your interests and the time of year.

Water as the Theme of the Geopark Trail

The Rothenberg Geopark Trail in Oberzent puts water at its center. Ten information panels explain the importance of water to the people of Rothenberg and the Finkenbach Valley, as well as the development of the water supply. The themed perspective therefore ranges from the importance of water to people to the history of its supply. Here, water is not just a feature of the landscape, but also part of the town’s history.

The Technological History of the Water Supply

From 1902 until the 1960s, the pumping station supplied Rothenberg at first, and later Ober-Hainbrunn and Kortelshütte as well. The facility pumped water from a spring in the Gammelsbach Valley to the Rothenberg elevated reservoir without using external energy. The spring was 40 meters above the pumping station; the water overcame an elevation difference of 280 meters on its way to the reservoir. These figures refer to different elevation measurements: one is the spring’s position relative to the pumping station, and the other is the elevation difference to the reservoir.

The restored, operational water motor dating from 1902 is displayed in an exhibition building at the nature parking area on state road L3410 between Rothenberg and Rothenberg-KortelshĂĽtte. Together with the information about the pumping station, it offers a look at the technical side of the water supply: its operating period, the area it served, and the heights the water had to overcome.

Hiking and Seasonal Options

Qualified circular hiking routes in Oberzent include the Odenwald-Neckar Route Rothenberg/Hirschhorn and the Rothenberg Geo Trail, whose theme is water. The Odenwald-Neckar Route starts and ends in Rothenberg. If you hike it counterclockwise, you start at the stone cross south of the hilltop town, by the Alter Schuttplatz rest area; the route is marked R5. The two trails also differ in focus: the Odenwald-Neckar Route has a named starting and ending point in Rothenberg, while the Geo Trail centers on the theme of water.

Another option is the Rothenberg cross-country ski trail. It is of medium length and flat, running across the fields on Rothenberg’s scenic high plateau. Its availability in winter depends on snow conditions. In the area around Rothenberg, quiet forest paths connect the scenic heights of Oberzent-Kortelshütte with Hirschhorn Castle on the Neckar; views of the Neckar Valley occasionally open up. Trail conditions and views vary by season. Choosing activities therefore depends both on your preferred focus and on the time of year.

A Historical Connection

The town’s more distant past also adds to the picture of 20th-century technology. In 1353, Emperor Charles IV granted Rothenberg as an imperial fief to Knight Engelhard I of Hirschhorn and his heirs. This historical connection offers a different perspective in time from the water supply, whose pumping station operated from 1902 until the 1960s.
