A life-size Roman statue made of Carrara marble and a long-standing Kerb festival give Biebesheim am Rhein a distinctive cultural profile. At the local history museum, archaeological history, stone artefacts and a media station about a teacher born in Biebesheim come together. The Biwesemer Kerb offers a different highlight: a procession of the Kerweborsch through the town is part of the festival.
Culture and History in Biebesheim am Rhein
In the entrance area of the local history museum stands the Togatus Biebesheim, a life-size Roman statue made of Carrara marble. It dates from 20 to 10 BC. Its material, scale and date make it a tangible introduction to the Roman past. The local history museum reopened on 2 December 2023 after being closed for eight years. If you are planning a visit, check the current visitor information in advance.
The Lapidarium offers a different perspective on the past. There, the local history museum displays historical boundary stones, milestones and road stones, as well as a Rottenstein from the Rhine dike. Rather than focusing on a single work of art, this collection showcases different types of stone: it ranges from boundary markers and evidence of historic routes to the stone from the Rhine dike. Together, the museum’s remarkable individual piece and artefacts associated with orientation and routes complement one another.
A media station is dedicated to Hermann Wilhelm Hammann, a teacher born in Biebesheim. Together with the Togatus and the Lapidarium, it offers another way to explore local history—this time through a person. The museum’s themes thus range from a Roman statue and historic stones to the memory of a Biebesheim resident.
The Biwesemer Kerb also connects history with a specific occasion to plan a trip around. It has been celebrated since the 17th century, four weeks after Easter; the festival includes a procession of the Kerweborsch through Biebesheim am Rhein. Because the date is set in relation to Easter, it changes from year to year. Check the date of the festival for the year you plan to visit.
Groß-Gerau: Nature and Trails Across the Wider Destination
Visitors looking beyond Biebesheim’s cultural attractions to the wider Groß-Gerau destination will find other highlights. The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Nature Reserve lies in the western part of the Groß-Gerau district along the Rhine. It is Hesse’s largest contiguous nature reserve and serves as a breeding and resting ground for numerous breeding and migratory birds. The Mönchbruch Nature Reserve lies between Rüsselsheim and Mörfelden-Walldorf in the Groß-Gerau district and is Hesse’s second-largest nature reserve. The two areas offer different points of interest within the district’s landscape.
There are several named options for planning routes across the district: the Lutherweg 1521 runs for around 31.5 kilometres through the Groß-Gerau district. There is also the Natura Trail Mörfelden-Walldorf. The “Kühkopf Tour” route runs on the Rhine side through the Groß-Gerau district and Rheinhessen. Before planning, check the current conditions on the route you intend to take.
The district also has something to offer for other interests. Three well-maintained golf courses cater to beginners and experienced players; the number may change if courses open or close. Swimming is available at indoor and outdoor pools and bathing lakes, although facilities and access conditions may vary seasonally. Guided tours cover industrial history, Jewish history, environmental topics and urban development. Check which tours are currently available and what booking conditions apply.
There are also clear points of reference for regional orientation and food culture: Frankfurt Rhine-Main Airport is partly located within the Groß-Gerau district. Asparagus is considered a culinary hallmark of the district. Ferries can extend tours beyond the district’s natural boundaries, the Rhine and Main; check current ferry timetables before planning.
