Trebur invites you to explore its half-timbered architecture and local history. A walk through the town reveals numerous buildings in the Franconian style, while the museum offers another way to learn about the municipality’s history, culture and economy. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these different areas of interest: would you mainly like to explore the townscape, see historic buildings or learn about the history through public programmes?

Half-timbered architecture in the historic town centre

The main street and the small, peaceful side lanes are an area where you can discover numerous half-timbered buildings. Angled farmsteads shape the historic town centre. The townscape can therefore be appreciated not just through a single building, but also by looking at the architectural styles along the way. Since 1997, Trebur has been part of the “From the Rhine to the Main and Odenwald” regional route of the German Half-Timbered House Road. This association places the town’s half-timbered architecture on a named regional route.

A number of specific buildings illustrate different periods of construction. The historic town hall at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz 6 was built in 1577. The two-storey half-timbered house at Astheimer StraĂźe 8 dates from around 1680 and has been preserved with very little alteration to its structure. The museum is housed in a half-timbered farmstead built between 1680 and 1700. Comparing these examples, the town hall predates the two buildings dated to around 1680.

Museum and public history programmes

The museum’s architectural ensemble includes exposed decorative half-timbering on the two-storey building, a courtyard, a barn set crosswise to the main building and a garden behind it. The complex has been largely preserved in its original condition. Those interested in construction methods will find different details here than on a walk along the main street and side lanes: the focus is on the farmstead and its individual buildings.

The museum is open from 2 to 5 pm on the first and third Sunday of each month. Check the opening hours again before your visit, as they may change. This lets you include a museum visit in your plans without assuming that it is open all day.

The Society for Local Heritage and History Trebur e.V., founded in 1970, offers another perspective on the municipality. It informs the public about the history, culture and economy of the municipality of Trebur through exhibitions, talks and guided tours. Alongside exploring historic buildings, visitors can therefore discover different forms of public history outreach. The topics and formats that interest you may help you choose the focus of your visit.

Cycling and regional perspectives

Cycling is another possible outing: from Trebur, a route runs for around three kilometres along a narrow road through meadows and fields, passing the Unterau farm. The section described has a specific distance and passes through a rural setting. If you include it in your plans, bear in mind that the road is narrow; no travel time or additional route length is specified.

The wider destination of Groß-Gerau also offers other distinct nature and landscape attractions. The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Nature Reserve lies in the west of Groß-Gerau district along the Rhine. It is Hesse’s largest contiguous nature reserve and serves numerous breeding and migratory birds as a breeding and resting site. The Mönchbruch nature reserve lies between Rüsselsheim and Mörfelden-Walldorf in Groß-Gerau district and is Hesse’s second-largest nature reserve. Asparagus is considered the district’s culinary hallmark. These details relate to Groß-Gerau as the wider travel destination and complement Trebur’s local focus on half-timbered architecture and local history with regional topics.
