Riedstadt offers nature and culture, with different highlights to consider when choosing a destination: the floodplain landscape of Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue and several themed hiking trails sit alongside the Büchner House and Riedsee. To help plan your stay, consider the specific differences. The trails range from an approximately 3.7 km nature trail to around 60 km of hiking paths in the nature reserve; the literary sites focus on Georg Büchner and Elisabeth Langgässer. This can help you decide whether landscape, literature and history, or water should be the main focus of your stay.
Floodplain Landscape and Trails in Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue
The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve includes parts of the cadastral districts of Leeheim and Erfelden in the municipality of Riedstadt and extends across cadastral districts in Riedstadt, Stockstadt and Biebesheim. It is the largest nature reserve in Hesse. Here, you can explore a floodplain landscape that has otherwise almost entirely disappeared along the Rhine. Around 60 km of hiking trails in the protected area are also suitable for cyclists. Trail conditions can vary by season; check them before setting out.
For a shorter themed trail, you can compare the different highlights. The Goller Erlebnispfad altes Neckarbett is about 3.7 km long. Along it, you can follow the interplay between natural conditions and human influence in shaping the landscape. The 9 km hiking trail to the Stromtal-Auenwiesen offers a different perspective on the landscape: ten information panels explain the distinctive features of this type of meadow and measures to protect it. The two trails differ in both length and subject matter.
The signposted Elisabeth-Langgässer hiking trail also combines exercise with a literary theme. Information panels present biographical details and quotations from the writer. Many walkers and literature enthusiasts enjoy using the trail in every season. This distinguishes it from the panels along the trail to the Stromtal-Auenwiesen: there, the focus is on the type of meadow and conservation measures; here, it is on a writer's life and work.
Visitor Information
Kühkopf Island can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a bridge from Erfelden or Stockstadt. If you are heading to the Knoblochsaue area, you can reach it via Erfelden or Leeheim. Visitor parking is available, among other places, at the Federal Network Agency on Schusterwörthstraße in Leeheim. As access and parking options may change, check the details before setting out; also take seasonal conditions into account when planning your routes.
Büchner House, Gallery and Riedsee
The Büchner House is the farmhouse at Weidstraße 9 where Georg Büchner was born. Since 1998, the permanent exhibition “Von Goddelau zur Weltbühne” has been on display in the restored house where he was born. Exhibitions, readings and lectures are held at the art gallery at the BüchnerHaus. The cultural offering therefore includes both an exhibition on Büchner's life and a changing programme of events at the gallery.
At Riedsee Leeheim, the focus is on the water. The 24-hectare gravel pit lake was created as a result of gravel extraction and has a designated bathing beach. Windsurfing is also one of the leisure activities at Riedsee. This offers a different focus when choosing your destination than the hiking trails: here, it's a lake with a bathing beach and water sports, while the trails explore nature and literature.
