The Wittstock Heath woodland is about two kilometres from Berlinchen and offers opportunities for hiking and walks. In the village itself, a village church with a clearly documented date, its historic organ and a settlement history with Wendish origins come together. Along with the landscape around Lake Berlinchen, this creates a focus on nature and local history.

Landscape around Berlinchen

Berlinchen lies in a landscape near the Mecklenburg Lake District. The surrounding area includes the Wittstock Heath woodland, as well as meadows and pastures bordering the marshland around Lake Berlinchen. These landscape features offer different points of interest: the heath is a specific destination for hikes and walks; by the lake, meadows, pastures and marshland describe the character of the surroundings. The approximate distance to the heath provides a guide for planning, without turning the landscape descriptions into a fixed route.

The village’s location also tells a story of its history. Berlinchen has Wendish origins; the original village layout was circular. The settlement was established on a hill and surrounded by marshes. Here, the settlement pattern and landscape are connected: the traditional circular layout and the hilltop location give the village a historic character, while the marshes form part of the surroundings described.

Village Church and Community Celebrations

The village church was built between 1852 and 1854. Its furnishings include an organ from Albert Hollenbach’s workshop in Neuruppin. The instrument has nine stops and was consecrated in 1899. The construction period and the organ’s history offer two distinct points of reference in time: the church dates from the mid-19th century, while the organ was consecrated later.

The cultural association’s events offer another glimpse into village life. Recurring examples include anglers’ festivals and harvest festivals. They provide occasional insights into community activities in the village; specific dates may change. If a festival coincides with your visit, check the latest dates in advance.

Historical Highlights in Wittstock/Dosse

The wider destination of Wittstock/Dosse also has its own historical highlights. The town fortifications are 2,435 metres long in total: 1,999 metres comprise the town wall, 264 metres the Amt wall and 172 metres the castle wall. Apart from a small fieldstone base in the north, they are built entirely of monastery-format bricks. The three named sections of the wall and the distinctive building material offer two specific ways to explore the town’s history. The Ostprignitz Museum is also located in the Bishop’s Castle.

Another notable building is St. Mary’s Church, construction of which began in the 13th century. It is a landmark of the former episcopal town of Wittstock. Its Baroque tower is 68 metres high, offering a wide view over the town and surrounding countryside. The three-aisled church also has a varied interior, including an altarpiece made up of two carved altars, a late Gothic sacrament shrine, a Baroque wooden baptismal font, a Madonna in a halo of rays, the Lütkemüller organ and the pulpit.

A public guided tour of Wittstock’s historic old town is offered from May to October. It covers interesting stories and legends from the town’s history. Check the latest dates before your trip. The parks offer their own distinctive features: Bleichwall Park lies right beside the historic town wall and an old cloth factory. The Glinze flows through Friedrich-Ebert Park, crossed by two wooden bridges.
