Rheinsberg Palace on Lake Grienerick combines nature, architecture and art. The town also offers literary and ceramic heritage, a seasonal opera festival, and walking tours and trails in the surrounding area. This makes it possible to explore Rheinsberg in different ways, whether your focus is on historic rooms, the town’s history or outdoor activities.

Palace and museum culture

The palace’s many works of art invite visitors to travel back to the 18th century. Restored interior decorations from the Frederician period around 1740 sit alongside early Neoclassical interiors dating to around 1786. Together with paintings and decorative arts, they convey a sense of the former owners’ domestic culture, way of life and collecting activities. The different interior styles offer insights into distinct periods of design.

The Kurt Tucholsky Museum keeps the poet’s legacy alive with exhibitions, guided tours and readings. It also runs other literary projects, including the Rheinsberg town writer project. The Kurt Tucholsky Literature Museum is also included in the German Federal Government’s Blue Book as a cultural heritage site of national significance.

The Rheinsberg Ceramics Museum focuses on a different subject: it presents more than 260 years of Rheinsberg ceramics. Its collection includes precious objects from the late 18th century, early successes in fine stoneware production from the first half of the 19th century, and the Rheinsberg teapot. Those interested in decorative arts will find a timeline here, from early objects to a distinct Rheinsberg ceramic tradition.

Opera festival in spring and summer

In spring and summer, the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg presents an international festival for young opera singers. Music theatre and concerts are performed by young artists from around the world against the backdrop of Rheinsberg Palace. The festival offers a seasonal highlight for a trip focused on music and the performing arts.

Outdoor opera productions take place at the Hedge Theatre and on the stage at the Cavalier House. Concerts are held in the Mirror Hall and the palace theatre. As the programme changes from year to year, it is worth checking the schedule for the relevant year before your trip.

Walking tours of Rheinsberg

The self-guided town walk passes historic half-timbered houses, the Old School and St. Lawrence Church, which dates to the 13th century. Guided tours are also available for this route. This gives visitors a choice of ways to explore the town’s history, from a walk past specific historic sites to guided tours.

Rheinsberg also offers a mobile town walk designed for smartphones, following a route past historic sites in the town. The two walking tour options offer different points of reference: the self-guided walk highlights half-timbered houses, the Old School and the church, while the mobile walk focuses on historic sites along its route.

Trails in nature and the surrounding area

Most of the Rheinsberg municipal area lies within the Ruppin-Stechlin Nature Park. Hiking trails lead to and from Rheinsberg through nature and to places of interest. Many routes through the forests near Rheinsberg are also designated bridleways. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between hiking trails and designated horse-riding routes.

A network of cycle paths with a total length of around 40 kilometres runs through Rheinsberg and its surrounding area. Branch routes from the Berlin–Copenhagen Cycle Route lead to Rheinsberg; as signage may change, it is advisable to check the current route. The local cycle network and the long-distance route’s branches offer different points of reference when planning a ride.

Further afield in the region lies the Rheinsberg Lake District, where more than 70 lakes invite visitors to go boating and swimming. These activities are in the lake district, not solely within the town of Rheinsberg.
