Monastery ruins on Lake Wutz, a Baroque town church and three lakes give Lindow (Mark) several clear focal points for a stay. Architectural and literary history sit alongside bathing spots and signposted running routes.

Lindow Monastery: Ruins, Church and Literature

The ruins of the convent and monastery church of Lindow Monastery lie on a small peninsula in Lake Wutz. The convent building ruins, restored in 2011, are considered a landmark of the monastery and the town of Lindow. The old monastery grounds, with their ivy-covered park, have also been restored in recent years. A path beside Lake Wutz passes through a nature reserve to the monastery grounds and the monastery ruins there.

The monastery church, destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War, is now used as an open-air church for devotions and services. Free access is indicated for the monastery complex; the convent building ruins can be entered during the day from Easter to the end of October. Check before your visit whether these access conditions still apply.

Lindow Monastery also has a firm place in literary history: Theodor Fontane featured it as Wutz Monastery in his novel “Der Stechlin” and dedicated a poem to it. A visit to the monastery can thus be combined with a look at the literary portrayal of the place.

Town Church and Summer Concerts

The present-day Protestant town church was built from 1751 as a Baroque hall church under Georg Christoph Berger and was consecrated in 1755. Its fittings include the famous Sauer organ. The Lindow Summer Concerts take place in the church every year. If you are travelling for one of them, check the current event dates.

Water, Routes and Active Pursuits

At 438 hectares, Lake Gudelack is the largest of the three lakes near Lindow (Mark). There is a bathing facility in town; bathing spots are also listed on the north and east shores of Lake Gudelack. Bathing may be seasonal. The bathing facility and the lakeshore bathing spots are two separately listed options for spending time by the water.

Lindow is in the heart of the Stechlin running park and offers signposted routes for runners. For a different focus, the path beside Lake Wutz passes through a nature reserve to the monastery grounds. This information can help you choose your day’s activities: running routes, a path to the monastery and bathing spots offer different options, without implying a particular length of visit.

Museum, Visit Planning and the Wider Region

At the “Schau mal rein” attic museum, visitors can marvel at, touch and try out historical everyday objects. Visits are available on Sunday mornings or by appointment. Check in advance whether these visiting hours are still current, and plan accordingly if you have arranged a visit.

The wider travel destination of Ostprignitz-Ruppin offers a broader perspective: the region is predominantly rural and includes beech and pine forests, meadows, tree-lined avenues that provide shade, and numerous lakes and rivers. Part of Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park lies within the district and invites visitors to hike and cycle. The Ruppiner Seenland is one of the travel areas in Ostprignitz-Ruppin.
