Schwarzheide combines church architecture with a specific connection to cycling: the Lower Lusatian Mining Tour passes through the town and continues to GrĂĽnewalder Lauch. There are also routes in the surrounding area and activities on the water. When planning your overnight stay, it is worth deciding first what to focus on: churches and local history, or cycling tours and nature.

Church Architecture in Schwarzheide

The Luther Church is a simple half-timbered building with restrained Baroque elements. Construction began in 1754, making its earlier architectural history its defining feature.

The Christ Church is considered the first newly built Protestant church in the GDR after 1945. Regular services are still held there; check the current times before visiting.

The Holy Cross Church was built mainly by apprentices and consecrated in 1954. Together with the Christ Church, it complements the older half-timbered building with two perspectives on 20th-century church architecture.

GrĂĽnewalder Lauch and Cycling Routes

Grünewalder Lauch is located near Schwarzheide. The recreational lake was created by reclaiming two former open-cast mine sites. Activities include swimming and boating, as well as bicycle and boat rentals, a playground, and a beach café.

Walks and cycling tours around the lake can lead through forests and into the protected areas of Suden and Der Loben. Cranes use the wetlands for breeding, resting, and gathering. At GrĂĽnewalder Lauch, waterside recreation and protected habitats come together.

The 55-kilometre Senftenberg–Lauchhammer stage of the Lower Lusatian Mining Tour passes through Schwarzheide and continues to Grünewalder Lauch. Nearby Lake Senftenberg also offers beaches, water sports, and marinas along the route. Check the current services and conditions at the lakes before setting out.

Routes across the Wider Lusatian Region

Beyond this specific stage, routes across the wider Lusatian region cover different distances. The Fürst-Pückler Trail is a cycling tour of almost 500 kilometres through Lusatia’s history, passing castles, parks, village settlements, and cultural landscapes. The Niederlausitz Circular Route is 420 kilometres long and runs from the Spreewald through the Lusatian Lake District to the Kmehlener Berge. These figures illustrate the difference between a single stage and long-distance tours.

In the Wider Travel Destination of Oberspreewald-Lausitz

In the wider travel destination of Oberspreewald-Lausitz, the perspective extends beyond Schwarzheide. In the south of the district, the flooding of former open-cast mines is creating a waterscape with more than 20 artificial lakes: the Lusatian Lake District. The district also has hiking routes between 4 and 32 kilometres long, as well as cycle paths at least 40 kilometres long. These include independent or guided multi-day tours with good places to stop and eat.

More than 580 kilometres of signposted cycle routes connect the regions between the Spreewald and the Kmehlener Berge, linking southern Brandenburg with Saxony and northern Brandenburg. The stage through Schwarzheide and the district’s wider network of paths therefore offer different scales of cycling trip.
