Großräschen is a lakeside town in the Lusatian Lake District, where the lake, mining history and culture each add a distinctive touch. The town’s oldest house, the landscaped Avenue of Stones, the Kurmärker Civic Centre and the IBA Terraces offer different ways to explore local history. There are also options for active days: a 17-kilometre hilly circuit around the lake and the mostly flat “From Miner to Sailor” route. Guided vineyard walks with information from winemakers and wine tastings round out the selection.

Culture and Mining History

The Kurmärker Civic Centre was built in 1781 and is Großräschen’s oldest house. As a cultural centre, the Kurmärker hosts theatre, dance evenings, musicals, concerts, talks, exhibitions and trade fairs. The programme ranges from stage performances to talks and exhibitions; it is worth checking the event calendar when planning a specific visit.

The IBA Terraces consist of three minimalist structures connected by terraces. They are presented as a reflection of nature, culture and mining in the region. The exhibition “12 Questions – 12 Answers” explores Großräschen’s mining and clinker-making traditions, as well as its transformation from a former site for repairing large machinery into a harbour. The visitor centre is closed for renovation.

In the district of Dörrwalde, notable places include a Dutch-style windmill, historic farmsteads, a renovated smithy, the village church and a local heritage room. The windmill is used as a restaurant and event venue. Dörrwalde thus offers its own distinctive collection of sights alongside the cultural attractions at the Kurmärker and the IBA Terraces.

Avenue of Stones and Views

The Avenue of Stones in Großräschen arranges chunks of mining rock and selected trees into a field of stones, groups, a circle and individual stone columns. The different shapes make the arrangement itself a focal point: selected trees and boulders from mining come together here in several clearly defined forms.

From Victoriahöhe, you can look out over Lake Großräschen, the vineyard, the Avenue of Stones and Großräschen. Since 2007, a ship-shaped steel viewing platform has crowned Victoriahöhe. The viewpoint and the stone avenue therefore offer different perspectives on these places and the town’s mining history.

Wine, Cycling and Swimming

The operator of the IBA Terraces offers guided vineyard walks with information from winemakers and tastings of Großräschen wine. The experience combines a walk with insights into viticulture and a wine tasting; if you would like to take part, check the available dates in advance.

The Lake Großräschen circular route is 17 kilometres long; the town harbour of Großräschen is recommended as both its starting and finishing point. The route is hilly and runs on asphalt. By contrast, the “From Miner to Sailor” route starts and ends at the IBA Terraces. It runs mostly along paved cycle paths, with a few sections on side roads or compacted gravel, and is largely flat. You can choose between a specifically measured, hilly circuit around the lake and a mostly flat tour with a variety of surfaces.

Swimming is permitted at the designated beach on Lake Großräschen. The beach is unsupervised, and you swim at your own risk. As beach access and bathing rules may change, check the current local bathing regulations before swimming.

The tourist information centre sells regional products, cycling and hiking maps, and souvenirs, and organises town tours and day programmes. It is a place to go if you are looking for maps for your own cycling or hiking trips, or are interested in organised town tours and day programmes.
