Hohenbocka combines a landscape shaped by sand with architectural and local history. The Bucksche Schweiz, Possenberg with its observation tower about 25 metres high, and the castle and church provide different points of interest for your stay. When planning, you can therefore consider hiking trails, geological discoveries and historical details side by side.
Sandy landscapes and hiking trails
The Bucksche Schweiz near Hohenbocka is a hiking area. Its sandstone formations consist of hardened glass sand. The white Hohenbocka glass sand formed about 16 million years ago from the beaches and dunes of a shallow sea. Its geological history thus spans the formation of the sand and its hardening into sandstone formations.
East of Hohenbocka, an observation tower about 25 metres high stands on Possenberg. At the foot of the tower, a path leads to the sandstone cliffs at Heinrichsschacht. If you want to visit the cliffs, this provides a specific landmark to help plan the landscape-focused part of your trip.
Castle and church: different points in time
Hohenbocka Castle was built in 1897 and 1898 to Hans von Götz’s own designs; a fairy-tale image served as its inspiration. The façade reconstruction based on the historical model is dated to 1996. The construction period and the later reconstruction are two distinct stages in the castle’s history.
The church also offers its own historical connection. Wall frescoes dating from the time of its construction were rediscovered in 1958. In November 2008, the church’s 600th anniversary was celebrated. The rediscovery of the frescoes and the anniversary celebration therefore mark different events, not one and the same date.
Horse-riding activities and outdoor exercise
Reiterhof Schäfer offers carriage rides, riding holidays and equestrian tournaments. The riding stable is also considered a popular starting point for hikes in the Bucksche Schweiz. As activities may change, check the current dates and options in advance.
Hohenbocka Castle has a yoga room available for self-guided practice and gymnastics exercises. If you plan to use it, check its current availability in advance. In good weather, the castle park can be used for outdoor exercise and relaxation. The options are clearly distinct: a weather-dependent visit to the park, exercises in the yoga room, or activities at the riding stable.
The cycling tour starting and ending in Hosena
A cycling tour runs from Hosena through Hohenbocka, Peickwitz and GroĂźkoschen, then back to Hosena. The start and finish are at Hosena railway station. The route is mostly on paved cycle paths; some sections around the Sandgrubenteiche are partly covered with gravel and sand. When assessing the tour, the changing surfaces are therefore a specific planning consideration in addition to the route itself.
Oberspreewald-Lausitz at the regional level
In the wider destination of Oberspreewald-Lausitz, hiking routes in the district range from 4 to 32 kilometres. The district also has cycle routes of 40 kilometres or more, including individual or guided multi-day tours with good places to stop and eat. These details apply to the wider destination, not specifically to Hohenbocka.
More than 580 kilometres of signposted cycling routes connect the regions between the Spreewald and the Kmehlener Berge; at a regional level, they link southern Brandenburg with Saxony and northern Brandenburg. In the south of the district, the flooding of former open-cast mines is creating a water landscape with more than 20 artificial lakes: the Lusatian Lake District. This regional context complements Hohenbocka’s specific attractions with a broader perspective on hiking, cycling and the district’s landscape.
