Retzow can be discovered through two specific highlights: the walk from the village pond through the green village centre and the brick church dating from around 1500. The walk explores the village on foot; the church adds a historical note, with very old bells and grave steles. The wider Havelland destination also offers distinct nature, cycling and cultural experiences, including birdwatching, a cycle route and exhibitions.
A Walk Through the Village Centre
The walk leads from the village pond through the green village centre, past another small pond and a circular seating area. It offers a concrete way to get to know Retzow on foot. The seats in the circular area provide a possible stopping point along the way. Retzow thus offers two different ways to explore: a walk through the village and a look at its architectural and funerary heritage.
Church, Bells and Grave Steles
Retzow Church is a brick building dating from around 1500. Inside are very old bells, including one from the Middle Ages. At the entrance to the church grounds stand Neoclassical grave steles belonging to prominent local aristocratic families. The building, bells and tombs each add a different historical note and offer several ways to explore Retzow’s local history.
Nature Watching in the Wider Havelland Region
On the southern shore of Lake Gülpe, in the wider Havelland destination, a roughly 1.5-kilometre nature trail with illustrated information panels invites visitors to go birdwatching. During spring and autumn migration, up to 100,000 geese and hundreds of cranes gather there; many waders, ducks and great egrets also visit. The trail combines a manageable distance with a focus on birdwatching. Spring and autumn are the specified seasons for the migration activity.
Cycle Routes in Havelland
Cycling is another regional activity. Havelland’s node-based signposting allows you to plan individual cycle routes. The Havelland Cycle Route runs through the Havelländisches Luch via Nauen, Ribbeck and Rathenow to the Westhavelland Nature and Star Park. It is mostly paved, flat and pleasant to ride. The two options offer different kinds of guidance: the signposting helps you plan individual routes, while the Havelland Cycle Route has a named sequence of places and a described route profile.
Cultural Experiences in the Region
The Westhavelland Nature Park Centre brings the lowland landscape, the renaturalisation of the Lower Havel, Germany’s last great bustards and the country’s first Star Park to life for visitors of all ages. In Stölln, the Lilienthal Centre presents an exhibition of significance beyond the region. The Lilienthal Trail connects the centre with the IL 62 “Lady Agnes” at the foot of the Gollenberg. Havelland thus offers different ways to engage with culture: a visitor centre covering several landscape and cultural topics, and the exhibition in Stölln, with its associated trail between two named destinations.
