Kleßen Castle, the English Garden and the museums offer different historical perspectives on Kleßen-Görne: architectural history, landscaped paths, and the history of toys and books. Nature and waterside destinations add to the options when planning your trip. There is also a specific point of interest for cyclists: spur routes from two cycling routes lead to Kleßen.

Castle History and Park Paths

Kleßen Castle was built in 1723 as a three-winged complex. It was redesigned in the Neoclassical style in 1858, creating an impressive courtyard. The two dates mark different phases of construction: the complex dating from the early 18th century was followed, just over a century later, by its Neoclassical form.

The English Garden was laid out in 1797 by the von Bredow family. Its philosophical paths lead to a family tree, a swing overlooking the fields and a vineyard. Historically, the park was connected to the Märkischer Gutsgarten and served as a path to Lake Kleßen. The park’s history therefore includes both its landscape features and its former role as a route.

The Märkischer Gutsgarten is generally open to the public; you can get the key at the Toy Museum. Check the access arrangements before your visit, as they may change. The Toy Museum is part of the Kleßen manor house complex, which includes the castle, the Märkischer Gutsgarten and the former village school.

Toys, Books and Church Architecture

The Toy Museum displays examples from the past two centuries of the German toy industry across seven rooms. The Children’s Book Museum explores early picture-book history and features, among other works, Orbis sensualium pictus from 1714. The museums focus on different subjects: the history of the toy industry in one, early picture books in the other.

Kleßen village church dates back to a half-timbered church built in 1698. It underwent a thorough renovation in 1913 and was completed as a plastered building. Alongside the Neoclassical redesign of Kleßen Castle, these stories of the buildings represent different historical periods and architectural forms.

Protected Area and Waterside Destinations

The Görner See Nature Reserve covers approximately 226 hectares. Its protected habitats include reed beds, swamp forests and wet meadows; it is home to rare amphibians and reptiles as well as numerous bird species. For nature enthusiasts, the focus is on these wetland habitats and the groups of animals that live there.

Lake Kleßen, near Kleßen, has a bathing beach, a large sunbathing lawn and a playground. Facilities may change, so check their availability before your visit. The lakes have different attractions: Görner See is known for its protected habitats, while Lake Kleßen offers a beach, a sunbathing lawn and a playground.

Cycling Routes and a Local Product

Kleßen can be reached via detours from the Havelland Cycle Route and the Tour Brandenburg. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can use these routes as access points.

At an old forge in Görne, the Sternenhonig honey forge sells honey from its own bee colonies. As availability may change, check in advance if you plan to buy some.
