Garlitz offers several ways to explore Märkisch Luch: a mixed forest, observation towers and a tour with 13 information boards each offer a different perspective. Garlitz is a district of the municipality of Märkisch Luch, on the edge of Westhavelland Nature Park. The forest offers opportunities for hiking and cycling; in the right season, you can also pick mushrooms. If you would like to include nature watching and local history in your travel plans, you’ll find specific ideas here for your stay.
Forest, Trails and Great Bustards
The mixed forest provides a setting for hikes and bike rides. Several running and Nordic walking routes have also been designated in Garlitz. There are two observation towers for birdwatching: one on Pflaumenweg and one on Schwarzen Weg. From there, you can watch great bustards. Please observe the designated viewing times and stay on the prescribed paths.
The playground, story trail and fitness trail also share a design feature: all three are made of wood and have the same design. The story trail takes you on a walk through the village and presents important events in its history on 13 information boards. It combines exercise with a closer look at Garlitz’s history—unlike the designated running and Nordic walking routes, which focus on exercise.
Village Church and Architectural History
Garlitz Village Church was dedicated on September 24, 1826, and features simple neoclassical forms. It is a single-nave plastered building with a pulpit altar at gallery level and a sacristy below. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one nave; a plastered building has plastered exterior walls. The pulpit altar combines the pulpit and altar in a single structure. These architectural features add a specific example of Garlitz architecture to the village’s historical tour.
Cultural Life in Garlitz
The Garlitzer Heimatkulturverein e.V. (Garlitz Local Culture Association) was founded in 2004. It supports the village community and the preservation of local culture. Activities organized by the association include children’s musicals, theater performances and historical lectures. It also established the “Kultur und Kulinaria” series. The KULTUR-BAR adds to the association’s activities during the winter months. If you would like to plan your stay around a cultural event, check the latest dates before making plans.
