Schönwalde-Glien offers specific ways to explore each of these interests, without requiring you to follow a fixed day-by-day itinerary.

Forest Trails and Cycling

The Waldwichtel Trail in Schönwalde-Glien is more than three kilometres long and has eleven stations. You can use it as a nature trail, a fitness trail, or an exploration route. These three descriptions highlight different aspects of the same route: nature, exercise, and discovery. If the exact length or number of stations matters for your plans, check the information in advance.

Forest hikes for adults and children are organised from the Pausin Forest School. If you want to include one of these hikes in your plans, confirm what is currently on offer in advance.

When choosing cycling routes, it is worth checking the route each one follows. The Havelland Cycle Route runs directly alongside the MAFZ Erlebnispark Paaren. The “Dörferkranz um den Krämer Forst” cycling route passes through Schönwalde-Glien and connects its districts with places including Oberkrämer. The Krämer Forst cycle tour, meanwhile, starts and finishes in Schönwalde. You can distinguish the routes by their local connections: one runs alongside the Erlebnispark, one passes through Schönwalde-Glien and connects to Oberkrämer, and one starts and ends in Schönwalde. Check current route maps before deciding on a specific section.

Erlebnispark Paaren covers 23 hectares and is home to the only ARCHE domestic animal park certified in Brandenburg and Berlin. If this distinction matters for your plans, check its current status in advance.

Culture and Local History

Schönwalde-Dorf Church houses a very well-preserved Wagner organ dating from 1739. The Stägehaus in Paaren im Glien represents another aspect of local history: it is the oldest house in the district, built after the great village fire of 1678, and a Havelland-style central-passage house with a timber frame and clay walls. You can also see the Havelland butter-making tradition at the Stägehaus; check that it is currently open before your visit.

The Kulturmühle in Perwenitz showcases modern art and landscape painting. The options therefore range from a historic instrument to a house with a distinctive architectural style, as well as art and landscape painting. If you have a particular exhibition in mind, check the Kulturmühle’s current programme.

The history of postal services can also be traced through two distinct details. Ziegenkrug was a post stop on the forest road known as the “Hamburger Poststraße.” Near Ziegenkrug, a sandstone post mile marker was erected in 1803 following precise surveying. Together, these details illustrate two aspects of historic transport routes: a former postal stop and a marker erected after precise surveying.

Schönwalde Lock adds a technical perspective on waterways to these topics. On the Havel Canal, it connects the different water levels of the Upper and Lower Havel Waterways, while bypassing the Berlin city area. Its focus is therefore the function of a waterway link—a different emphasis from the forest trails, cycling routes, and cultural sites.
