At Gollenberg, the Lilienthal Trail connects the Lilienthal Centre in Stölln with the IL 62 “Lady Agnes” at the foot of Gollenberg. Aviation history and the landscape each have a tangible point of connection here: on the trail, with its information boards and aircraft models, and on the nature trail, with native animals and plants.

The Lilienthal Trail between the park, forest and summit

The Lilienthal Trail passes through the Bürgerpark and along sculptures. It climbs through a sparse oak-mixed forest to the 108-metre-high summit of Gollenberg; from there, the view extends across the Havelland lowlands. Information boards and models of aircraft designed by Otto Lilienthal offer insights into the early days of aviation. The nature trail in the Gollenberg nature reserve focuses on native animals and plants, offering a different perspective from the aviation information boards and models.

Memorial sites in Gollenberg and Stölln

At the summit stands the wind harp at Otto Lilienthal’s historic launch site; on Gollenberg’s northern slope, a memorial stone marks the site where he crashed. The Otto Lilienthal memorial site is on Gollenberg, near Stölln village church. The church is a hall church dating from 1824, with a Renaissance epitaph altarpiece.

The IL 62 “Lady Agnes” at the foot of Gollenberg houses a permanent exhibition on the history of INTERFLUG. At the various stops, you can discover both specific memorial sites to Otto Lilienthal and other aspects of aviation history, as well as a distinctive building in Stölln.

Getting there and planning your accommodation

From Berlin Hauptbahnhof, you can reach the Gollenberg circular route in about two hours by taking the RE4 to Rathenow, then bus 687 to Stölln. Bus 684 between Rathenow and Neustadt/Dosse stops in Stölln at weekends. As timetables and stops can change, check the connections for your travel date.

Choose your accommodation based on the places you actually plan to visit, and factor the most suitable transport connections into your plans.

In the wider Havelland destination

Within the wider Havelland destination, Lake Gülper See offers a different focus from the Lilienthal sites. A roughly 1.5-kilometre-long nature trail with illustrated information boards along the southern shore invites visitors to watch birds. During spring and autumn migration, up to 100,000 geese and hundreds of cranes gather at the lake; many waders, ducks and grey herons also come here. Its seasonal appeal makes the lake especially interesting if birdwatching is part of your travel plans.

For a broader trip through Havelland, the Havelland Cycle Route offers a different perspective: it runs through the Havelländisches Luch via Nauen, Ribbeck and Rathenow to the Westhavelland Nature and Star Park. The cycle route is mostly paved, flat and pleasant to ride. Havelland’s numbered junction signage lets you put together your own cycling routes. This allows you to choose between a focus on Lilienthal in Gollenberg and other cultural, nature or cycling themes in the wider Havelland area when planning your trip.
