Reichenberg Castle tells the story of the town’s long history; nearby, the Würzburg Forest Adventure Trail complements the cultural focus with playful learning in the woods. For your stay, you can choose between historic architecture and an experience in nature.

Reichenberg Castle: History and Architecture

Reichenberg Castle was the seat of the Barons Wolffskeel von Reichenberg from 1378. Its core is medieval; the castle was partially destroyed during the German Peasants’ War in 1525. Its medieval origins and destruction mark different aspects of its history.

The complex is a closed, three-wing structure arranged around an inner courtyard. Its architecture also includes a triangular enceinte and two residential buildings with stepped gables. The enclosed overall layout and the gable forms are thus distinct features. Anyone interested in architectural history will find both a historical point of reference and a clearly defined architectural design here.

A Forest Trail Nearby

The WĂĽrzburg Forest Adventure Trail lies between Reichenberg and Kist. A small climbing course, a wooden xylophone, a renovated observation tower, and other stations invite children and adults to learn through play. The trail offers a different focus from the castle: here, activity stations and outdoor learning take center stage.

After a period of renovation, the trail reopened in October 2023. At the time of its reopening, it was accessible to people with disabilities; families and school classes were listed as target groups. For a visit today, please check current access arrangements in advance.

More to Discover in the Wider WĂĽrzburg Destination

The wider Würzburg destination complements Reichenberg’s themes with other places and points of interest. In Ochsenfurt, the historic old town is surrounded by an almost complete fortification system with numerous town gates and towers. The New Town Hall there is another architectural highlight: it dates from the 15th century and has a unique clock with figures and moon phases in its small lance-shaped turret.

In Röttingen, the history of Brattenstein Castle dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when its oldest buildings were constructed. The castle was home to various noble families, including the Lords of Hohenlohe. Its courtyard also has a theatrical history: since July 21, 1984, it has been the venue for the Röttingen FRANKENFESTSPIELE. Röttingen thus combines historic castle buildings with a long-standing connection to cultural events; this does not imply any current performance dates.

The landscape of the Würzburg district offers another perspective: vineyards, forests, broad open Gau landscapes, and the Main Valley shape the cultural landscape. Frickenhausen’s Kapellenberg provides a tangible connection to wine. There, three massive blocks of shell limestone form an “altar” where, among other things, wine tastings are held outdoors.

Two seasonal boat trip options are available on the Main at different locations in the wider destination. The Ochsenfurt Old Town Ferry Nixe offers regular round trips and ferry services from May to October. From April to October, excursion boats operated by the “Weiße Flotte” run several times a day between Veitshöchheim and Würzburg. As these services are seasonal, please check the current timetable before planning your trip.
