In Thüngersheim, wine-related trails, geological and mythological themes, and half-timbered houses stand out. The Bocksbeutel Trail runs through the municipal area, Vinomax is located on the Scharlachberg, a bronze Ariadne stands on the Johannisberg, and several half-timbered houses can be found in the old town. These different highlights help you organize nature and culture themes for your stay.

Trails and winegrowing

The Bocksbeutel Trail runs from Veitshöchheim to Retzbach through the municipal area of Thüngersheim and is an alternative to the Main Trail. The Wine Trail connects the Bocksbeutel Trail with the Orchid Trail. Its information boards cover grape varieties and winegrowing, offering an overview of these subjects. This gives you two different aspects to consider: an alternative to the Main Trail and a connection between two trails with information about winegrowing.

The route to Vinomax climbs via Weinbergsweg and Scharlachsgrund. Before setting off, check the signs on site so you can confirm the route as you go.

Vinomax and Ariadne

Vinomax rises prominently above the lower Muschelkalk limestone banks on the Scharlachberg. Its location links wine, research and education. The geological setting and several thematic connections come together here. This sets Vinomax apart from the information boards along the Wine Trail, which focus on grape varieties and winegrowing.

At the terroir-f site on Thüngersheim’s Johannisberg stands a large bronze sculpture of Ariadne from Greek mythology. The sculpture adds an artistic and mythological dimension, distinct from Vinomax’s connections to research and education. Comparing these themes gives you two different perspectives on local sites: a mythological figure on the Johannisberg and the links between wine, research and education on the Scharlachberg.

Townscape and surroundings

The winding lanes of the old town are home to several well-preserved or fully restored half-timbered houses. This gives the town center a different focus from the themed sites on the two vineyards: here, historic architectural forms shape the townscape. Half-timbering is a building method that uses a load-bearing timber frame with infilled spaces.

Just beyond the edge of Thüngersheim, a historic wine press stands directly beside the vineyards. It adds a historic feature to the wine-related trails and sites. The wine press is in the destination’s immediate surroundings, making it another local point of interest alongside the old town and vineyards.

The area between Thüngersheim and Güntersleben is also part of the region’s character: it was designated a nature reserve in 1940. Unlike individual works of art and buildings, the point of interest here is an area between two towns. The year records when it was designated and gives this landscape a historical context.
