A richly carved half-timbered house bears the year 1197, while cycling and hiking trails show Margetshöchheim from different perspectives. There is also a pedestrian connection across the Mainsteg to the opposite bank, as well as activities on the river. When choosing a destination, you can therefore start by considering what interests you most: the historic townscape, trails along and across the Main, or activities on the water.

Half-Timbered Houses and History in the Townscape

Old farmsteads and half-timbered houses shape the view along the Main riverbank. At Mainstraße 2 stands the oldest documented building in Margetshöchheim: a half-timbered house richly decorated with carvings. The year 1197 appears on its left corner post. Here, visible architecture meets a specific historical date.

The history of the church site also goes back a long way: around 1300, Margetshöchheim’s first small church was built on the site of today’s parish church. The half-timbered house and the church site thus represent different historical traces in the village: a surviving building with a date on the one hand, and the early development of a church site on the other.

Between the Main Riverbank and the Heights

The Two-Bank Panorama Trail crosses the Margetshöchheimer Höhfeldplatte. Several hiking trails explore the heights and offer views of the Main Valley. Along the river, the Main Cycle Route, awarded five stars by the ADFC, runs directly beside the water through Margetshöchheim. Two different landscape settings are therefore central to planning: trails across the heights with views of the Main Valley, and a cycling route along the river.

The opposite bank of the Main can be reached on foot from Margetshöchheim via the Mainsteg. There is also a beach volleyball court on the cycle path along the northern bank of the Main. The footbridge and court add a pedestrian link to the other bank and a specific place for leisure along the route. Which of these options suits your stay depends on whether you would rather hike, cycle or spend time by the river.

Water Activities and Events

The riverbank in Margetshöchheim is also used for stand-up paddleboarding and surfing. If you are planning a sailing trip on the Main, you can contact the Margetshöchheim Sailing Association; check contact options in advance. A swimming cove with a play area was created by the barbecue area at the southern edge of the village. As the condition of a facility can change, it is advisable to check its current status before visiting.

Two cultural events offer different highlights: the Margaretenfest is held annually in honour of the village’s patron saint. MainART is a well-known art festival in Margetshöchheim’s old town. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the dates before making arrangements. This lets you choose your travel dates around the event without treating the two events as the same.

The Wider Region: The Würzburg Travel Destination

The wider Würzburg travel destination is characterised by a cultural landscape of vineyards, forests, broad open plain areas and the Main Valley. Historic architecture can be seen, for example, in Ochsenfurt: an almost complete fortification with numerous gates and towers surrounds the old town. The New Town Hall dates from the 15th century; its Lanzentürmchen houses a clock with figurines and a moon display.

Rottendorf offers a different historical focus. The former moated castle and the Fronhof are among its oldest buildings; the moated castle was built before 1500. After its foundation stone was laid in 2012, it was converted into a library with a reading café and a multi-purpose hall for community events and weddings. These examples broaden the view beyond Margetshöchheim: the wider Würzburg travel destination includes not only riverbanks and half-timbered houses, but also a fortified old town and historic buildings in other towns.
