At the Mainlandbad, a five-lane swimming pool and a large non-swimmer pool meet hiking trails and cultural history. This gives you different priorities to choose from when planning: a walk in the forest, a visit to the swimming pool, or time to explore historical landmarks and events.
Swimming and Leisure Activities
The swimming pool at the Mainlandbad is 25 metres long and has five lanes. The large non-swimmer pool is between 0.6 and 1.30 metres deep. The two pools therefore differ both in their intended use and in their stated water depths.
In addition to the pool, the Mainlandzentrum has a restaurant with a bowling alley, a sports hall and a mini-golf course. As municipal facilities may change operators, check the current operator information before your visit.
Hiking Trails with Different Destinations
The “Naturpfad” (Nature Trail) in Höchberg’s municipal area leads from Oberzell Monastery through the state and municipal forest to Erbachshof. By contrast, the circular hike along the forest nature trail returns to the car park at the forest sports ground after about an hour. This gives you two different options for planning: a route with named endpoints and a loop with an approximate duration.
The “Kreuzle” is at the end of “Weg zum Kreuz” (Road to the Cross). Hiking trails to Frankenwarte start there; other trails lead to the Steinbachtal valley. Frankenwarte and Steinbachtal are two named hiking destinations to consider from this starting point.
Culture and Events
Since 2020, the Kulturscheune Höchberg has been a meeting place for culture lovers from Würzburg district. Its programme includes cabaret, music, theatre, film, readings and talks, as well as events for specific audiences. If a particular event is to shape your stay, check the date in advance.
The traditional “Tanz um den Maibaum” (Maypole Dance) takes place every year on 1 May in the market square. Members of the local heritage and traditional costume association dance in typical Franconian dress. On the Sunday of the parish fair, residents can take part in the “Hammeltanz” (ram dance) and “Göggelesschlagen” on the market square.
Historical Landmarks in Höchberg
The former Israelite preparatory school in Höchberg now houses two documentation rooms with a permanent exhibition. Guided tours are also available; check the arrangements in advance.
The seven Stations of the Cross at Höchberg’s Kreuzkapelle are a cultural-historical monument because of their connection to the witch trials, an artistic monument because of their association with the renowned master Michael Kern, and a religious monument because of the content of the relief panels. The Catholic parish church of the Nativity of Mary was one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites for Würzburg and the surrounding area, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The history of the former synagogue is also linked to a specific date: the Evangelical Lutheran parish bought it in 1951 and converted it into a place of Protestant worship.
