A stone oven built to historical designs makes the Angelberger Back-Häusla a distinctive focal point for a stay in Tussenhausen. Another cultural attraction is the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The wider travel destination of Unterallgäu adds its own regional perspective to the local themes.

Baking and culture in Tussenhausen

The documented history of Tussenhausen begins with a donation. The Angelberger Back-Häusla adds a tangible place of bread-baking craftsmanship to this historical perspective: the bakery was established in Tussenhausen in 2003 through a great deal of voluntary commitment and craftsmanship. Its stone oven was built to historical designs. This brings together the beginning of the town’s documented history and a more recent bakery inspired by history.

On the regular baking days, residents can bake their own dough in the stone oven until it becomes finished bread. Baking is therefore limited to specific days and provides a practical connection to the bakery. Another cultural attraction in Tussenhausen is the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. Together, the baking tradition and the chapel represent different aspects of local culture.

The wider travel destination of Unterallgäu

The Iller to the west and the Wertach to the east form natural boundaries of the Unterallgäu. The Unterallgäu is located along the A7 and A96 motorways; a dense road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg further add to the region’s good accessibility. Before travelling, check the route that suits you and the current traffic conditions.

Trails, forests and landscapes

Throughout the Unterallgäu, cycling and hiking trails are consistently signposted; there are also the Glückswege (Paths of Happiness). Several forest discovery trails each focus on different topics: in Bad Grönenbach, a 3.2-kilometre trail introduces visitors to the forest ecosystem. The 2.7-kilometre Buxheim Forest Discovery Trail loops around the Buxheim pond and aims to make nature accessible to all the senses. In the Bannwald forest in Ottobeuren, eleven stations lead along the forest discovery trail. Forest knowledge, a trail around the pond and stations in the Bannwald thus offer different experiences. Benninger Ried is easy to explore on foot and has its own educational trail and an observation platform.

Culture and seasonal events

The Unterallgäu’s notable architectural landmarks include the Baroque basilica in Ottobeuren and Mindelburg Castle in Mindelheim. The Fugger Castle in Kirchheim is home to the world-famous Cedar Hall; the former Imperial Charterhouse in Buxheim is known for its choir stalls. Today, the Sebastian Kneipp Museum in the monastery’s east wing documents the life and work of the famous priest, with more than 2,000 exhibits. The courtyard of Mindelburg Castle is open year-round, while the keep, converted into an observation tower, is open from April to October. Check the current seasonal opening times before your visit.

Seasonal planning also includes the Culinary Mile in Bad Wörishofen. The Culinary Mile takes place twice a year, in spring and autumn, and offers freshly prepared food at numerous tasting stands. Check the specific event dates in advance. Bad Wörishofen is one of the Unterallgäu’s Kneipp spa towns; Ottobeuren is a Kneipp health resort.
