Woringen combines a rich church history with insights into agriculture: the former Church of St. Mary and the approximately five-kilometre-long agricultural trail offer different highlights for a stay. There are also sports and leisure activities. When planning your visit, you can choose between cultural history, agricultural topics and exercise.
Church and Local History
The Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Woringen, the former Church of St. Mary, was built after 1450 by the Möttelin lords and the local community. Four predecessor churches stood north of the present church; excavations confirmed their existence in 1959. The first Protestant service was held there on 6 December 1532. The earlier buildings and this precisely dated event represent different periods in the town’s history.
The building and art history also spans several periods. The Gothic spire probably dates from the time when the present church was built and is covered with brightly glazed roof tiles. Frescoes in the choir were uncovered in 1968, dated to 1490–1500 and attributed to the Strigel workshop. The Neo-Gothic altar was made in 1892 at the Vogt art-carving workshop in Memmingen. The Baroque pulpit is one of the oldest in the district; Johann Friedrich Sichelbein I painted it in 1661. The Gothic spire, frescoes, altar and pulpit offer different ways to view the church from an architectural and art-historical perspective.
Two castle names are also part of the town’s history: documents from the latter half of the 14th century mention an Upper Castle on Kellerberg and a Lower Castle, the Schlößle. These names add another historical dimension to Woringen without implying that the sites are in use today or accessible to visitors.
Agricultural Trail and Leisure Activities
The Woringen agricultural trail is marked with a green tree and is about five kilometres long. Three dairy farms can be visited along the trail, with information about animal husbandry and feeding. Visits must be booked in advance. The route therefore combines a defined length and trail marker with a focus on agricultural practices.
Other options include the leisure area by the sports ground and the tennis courts on the edge of the forest. The leisure area has facilities for football, skating, beach volleyball and hockey, as well as a bocce court. Beginner and advanced training is offered on the beach volleyball court on Wednesdays; check the schedule locally before taking part. There are also three clay courts belonging to the tennis club on the edge of the forest. Check their current availability locally before your visit.
Planning details vary by activity: visits to the dairy farms require advance booking, beach volleyball training is listed for Wednesdays, and availability of the tennis courts should be checked locally. These differences can help you choose activities that fit your stay. In Woringen, historic buildings and local history sit alongside an agricultural trail and a range of sports facilities.
