Babenhausen brings together the history of Fugger Castle and a distinctive ensemble comprising the castle grounds, market square, and Stadtgasse. The parish church and chapels add further historical and religious themes, while the GĂĽnztal Cycle Path passes through the town. Architectural history, art, and outdoor activities thus stand side by side as different facets of a stay.

Castle Ensemble and the GĂĽnz Valley

The Schloss und Markt Babenhausen ensemble encompasses the entire castle grounds, including the castle garden within the surrounding wall, the associated utility and administrative buildings, the market square, and Stadtgasse on the slope of Castle Hill. The castle complex stands at the edge of a plateau. Its imposing west façade dominates the market square, which spreads out below it in the Günz Valley. Fugger Castle dates back to a 13th-century fortress; in the 16th century, it was expanded into the castle that stands today. Its architectural history thus distinguishes its medieval origins from its later form as a castle.

Fugger History and Visitor Access

The Fugger Museum has been housed in the castle since 1955. It is permanently closed until further notice, and the castle itself is also not open to visitors. The description of the collection presents the museum’s contents but does not indicate that it can currently be visited. The collection comprises twelve rooms containing examples of goldsmithing, glass, porcelain, sculptures, weapons, books, furniture, and sacred art objects. It documents six centuries of family and European history. The museum’s contents offer a distinct perspective on the history of the residence, but cannot currently be viewed on site.

Churches and Chapels from Different Periods

The parish church of St. Andreas dates from the 15th century and was given a Baroque makeover. The Rechberg Chapel, with tomb monuments dating from around 1470, is part of the church. The parish church’s stair tower also contains a Calvary group dating from around 1520. These two approximate dates are about five decades apart; the Baroque makeover marks another phase in the church’s construction. Different historical periods thus come together within the church complex.

The chapels also have their own distinctive features: the Gottesacker Chapel was built in 1722 and contains a Dance of Death cycle. The Aspen Chapel is a Catholic pilgrimage chapel dedicated to St. Mary, dating from around 1700, and was renovated in the 19th century. Its designation as a pilgrimage chapel distinguishes it from the Gottesacker Chapel, whose Dance of Death cycle represents a distinct theme in the town’s art history.

Cycling and Outdoor Activities

The GĂĽnztal Cycle Path passes through Babenhausen and is around 92 kilometers long in total. It runs mainly along quiet side roads and farm tracks, has no significant climbs, and is well suited to children. This length refers to the cycle path as a whole; Babenhausen lies along its route. This distinction is useful when planning a trip, since the total distance does not describe only the section through town.

Babenhausen also has a bathing lake or outdoor swimming pool with a sunbathing lawn, as well as outdoor facilities for beach volleyball, boules, and soccer. Alongside the long-distance cycling route, there are therefore local outdoor leisure options to choose from. Cycling and the outdoor facilities are separate activities for a stay and need not be combined into a single route.
