Ettringen offers two clearly distinct cycling perspectives for planning your trip: the easy, 141-kilometre Wertach Cycle Route passes through the town; the Ettringen Pilgrimage Loop starts and ends there. Wertach.Natur complements the tour themes with 20 information points and videos about the natural and cultural landscape along the Wertach. St. Martin combines architectural history with ceiling frescoes, while the Ettringen Cultural Days have been held annually since 1997. This gives you a way to consider cycling, information about the landscape and culture as key themes when planning your trip.
Cycling routes: a long-distance route or a loop
The Wertach Cycle Route follows the Wertach from Gersthofen to Bad Hindelang and passes through Ettringen. Its length of 141 kilometres and easy rating provide concrete points of reference for planning your tour. The Ettringen Pilgrimage Loop is laid out differently: it starts and ends in the town. Six kilometres run along gravel forest tracks, with the rest on asphalt. The two routes therefore differ in the features described: for the Wertach Cycle Route, the endpoints, length and rating are the main points; for the Pilgrimage Loop, they are its start and finish in Ettringen and its mix of surfaces.
Wertach.Natur on foot or by bike
At 20 points, Wertach.Natur videos provide information about the natural and cultural landscape along the Wertach. You can explore the points on foot or by bike. The Wertach.Natur app can notify users when they pass an information point. The offer thus combines landscape themes with two specified ways of getting around; the app notification provides an additional prompt when passing a point.
St. Martin and the Ettringen Cultural Days
The parish church of St. Martin was built in 1786; the lower section of its tower dates from around 1500. Inside are ceiling frescoes painted in 1786/87 by Johann Ch. T. Wink, a court painter to the Elector of Bavaria in Munich. The dates refer to different things: around 1500 is the date of the lower section of the tower, 1786 is the year the church was built, and 1786/87 is when the frescoes were painted.
The Ettringen Cultural Days have been held every year in the Saal der Hoffnung since 1997. International artists create a programme of music, variety entertainment and cabaret. Check the dates before your trip. The One World Centre of aktion hoffnung has been based in Ettringen since 1996, adding another long-standing institution to the town’s cultural offerings.
Getting there and finding your way
You can check current bus connections through the Verkehrsverbund Mittelschwaben transport association; check the right connection before travelling. MifaZ, the carpooling service, lets you find and offer options for shared private journeys. This gives you two different approaches to getting there: checking bus connections and finding privately organised shared rides.
The wider Unterallgäu region
In the wider travel destination of Unterallgäu, the Iller to the west and the Wertach to the east form the natural boundaries of the district. The A7 and A96 motorways, a dense road network, rail connections and Allgäu Airport in Memmingerberg help make Unterallgäu accessible. This information provides an overview of the region as a whole.
Cycling and hiking trails throughout Unterallgäu are signposted consistently across the district; the Glückswege trails are also located there. This district-wide trail guidance complements the specific tour descriptions for Ettringen with a regional overview of cycling and hiking options.
