Hiking trails from Hundelshausen lead to Zabelstein Castle Ruins; in the village itself, the focus is on dated buildings and the forest playground. The Cistercian Cycling Route North also rejoins its main route here. Hiking, cycling, local history and outdoor play opportunities thus come together as distinct highlights.

Hundelshausen is a parish village in the municipality of Michelau im Steigerwald in the Bavarian district of Schweinfurt.

Hiking and Cycling

If you would like to explore on foot, you can plan a hike from Hundelshausen to Zabelstein Castle Ruins. For cyclists, the Cistercian Cycling Route North is another option: it follows a cycle path from Altmannsdorf to Hundelshausen, where it rejoins the main route. The two connections therefore play different roles in your plans: the castle ruins are the stated destination for hikes, while Hundelshausen marks the point on the cycling route where you rejoin the main route.

The village’s history can be seen in several dated buildings and memorials. The “Hl. Sebastian” Inflation Church was built in 1921 and houses a Madonna dated to 1480. In front of the church stands a wayside shrine dating from 1764. There is also an old schoolhouse dating from 1879 in the village centre.

Village History and Forest Playground

The dates make it possible to compare the sites precisely: the 1480 Madonna and the 1764 wayside shrine are older than the church from 1921; the schoolhouse, too, dates from 1879, earlier than the church. Hundelshausen therefore brings together various historical points of interest, from the church’s furnishings to the former school building.

The Hundelshausen Forest Playground offers more outdoor activities. Its features include a raft crossing of the pond, a muddy play area with fresh spring water, and a multi-purpose climbing tower. Water, mud and climbing offer different ways to play, rather than focusing on just one activity.

Local Food and Drink

A regional tourism listing from 2024 mentions a seasonal wine tavern for 40 people at Weinbau Markert. For Gasthaus Bedenk, it lists home-style dishes and estate-produced wines. Before visiting, check whether the businesses are currently open and whether the listed offerings are still available.

More to Explore in the Wider Schweinfurt Destination

The wider Schweinfurt destination opens up a larger network of routes: the district of Schweinfurt has a well-developed network of cycle paths covering more than 800 kilometres, as well as an extensive network of hiking trails. The Schweinfurt 360° Tourist Information Centre offers cycling and hiking maps, along with suggested routes; digital maps are also available on its website.

The district’s natural attractions offer a different perspective, too. Brönnhof was added to the National Natural Heritage on 13 January 2016; the former military training area covers 746 hectares. It provides a habitat for protected species such as Bechstein’s bat and the great crested newt. Ellertshäuser Lake in the north of the district of Schweinfurt is used as a recreational area.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide what scale you have in mind: Hundelshausen itself, with its village history and hike to the castle ruins, or the wider natural attractions and route network across the Schweinfurt destination.
