Wipfeld combines the character of a small, historic wine village on the Mainschleife with trails through the village and vineyards. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the different highlights: the Historic Celtis Circular Trail leads to local history and literature, while the Zehntgrafen Wine Trail runs through the vineyards. Churches and village ensembles add to the cultural experience; the Main and Speiersberg offer different landscape views.
Local History on the Celtis Circular Trail
The Historic Celtis Circular Trail honors Conrad Celtis (1459–1508), described as Wipfeld’s most famous son and the first crowned German poet. At 22 stops, information boards provide details about historic buildings and events. The trail starts on Mainstraße, runs clockwise through the village, and ends at St. Johannis Parish Church. A detour to the Zehntgrafen Wine Trail is possible. The route through the lanes also passes the Wipfeld Literature House, a literary museum and cultural center for the village.
St. John the Baptist Parish Church reflects several phases of construction: the Julius Echter Tower was built in 1599, the choir followed in 1615, and the Neoclassical nave was built between 1786 and 1790. Its furnishings also combine different art-historical influences. The high altar is by Materno Bossi; the figures on the predella come from the former Heidenfeld Monastery and were created by Johann Peter Wagner. St. Ludwig Monastery Church was built in the Beuronese style and is considered an important testament to religious and cultural history. Well-preserved ensembles can also be found in the village center.
Vineyards and Franconian Wine Culture
The Zehntgrafen Wine Trail is a 3.3-kilometer circular route through Wipfeld’s vineyards. This clearly distinguishes it from the Celtis Circular Trail: here, the vineyard landscape takes center stage, while the other trail leads through the village’s history. The “Wipfelder Zehntgraf” vineyard covers more than 85 hectares of vines and is considered renowned.
The Zehntgrafen arbor, a rest area maintained by the Wipfeld Winegrowers’ Association, is located along the Zehntgrafen Wine Trail. Visitors can sample regional wines there. Various wine festivals, seasonal wine taverns, and wine bars are also part of this wine village. For your own planning, note that the events are not listed according to a fixed schedule here: no dates are provided for the wine festivals. If you want to attend a particular event or visit a specific venue, check the relevant dates in advance.
Main Floodplain and Views from Speiersberg
The community recreation area on the Main complements the large playground. From there, you can watch boats and observe the stork’s nest in the “Main Floodplain near St. Ludwig” nature reserve. This lets you enjoy the Main and take in the protected floodplain landscape without having to embark on a longer circular route.
For a different perspective, head to the lookout hill on Speiersberg: at 325 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest points on the Mainschleife. Wipfeld offers a range of experiences, from a historic walk through the lanes and past the Literature House to the wine trail, wildlife watching by the Main, or views from Speiersberg.
Plan Your Journey and Accommodation
Wipfeld has cycling and hiking trails. The village is easy to reach from the surrounding area via the Main Cycle Route and by Main ferry. If you plan to take the ferry, check the timetable before setting off. This will help you coordinate your arrival with your day’s plans.
If you are looking for a hotel in Wipfeld, the area’s highlights can help guide your choice of destination: local history and church art are well suited to a culturally focused stay, while the wine trails and wine culture offer a focus on the landscape and the wine village. By the Main, you can also watch boats and see the stork’s nest.
