Euerbach combines a historic fortified church with landmarks around the village and the Passion Play culture in Sömmersdorf. Compare the locations of specific accommodation options with the places you would like to visit.
Fortified Church, Church and Bible Garden
The historic fortified church encloses the Protestant Church of St Cosmas and Damian. Its crypt dates from 1251. The Bible Garden lies around the church in the Gaden complex. It was created by the Evangelical Lutheran parish and opened to the public. The church and garden offer different ways to explore Euerbach’s religious and historical heritage. Before visiting the garden, check the current access arrangements.
Another historical feature is the wayside shrine of St James in the square in front of the old fire station. The stone monument bears the year 1518 and depicts St James and two scallop shells. Pilgrims on the Way of St James can obtain a pilgrim stamp and sign the hiking book at the town hall during opening hours. Please check the opening hours.
Boundary Stone Garden and Trails
The boundary stone garden is right on the Kulturachter hiking trail and can be visited year-round. The garden and trail are therefore closely connected: visitors interested in the Kulturachter will find the garden directly along the route. The garden is also a destination in its own right, whether or not you are planning a longer hike.
Another path leads uphill to a viewpoint: the approximately 100-metre-long Friedensweg winds alongside the surviving concrete base of the “Würzburger Riese” radar device. Its length and destination make it a short, clearly defined stretch of trail.
The Jewish cemetery lies west of Euerbach, in the direction of Obbach. Visits and guided tours can be arranged by agreement through the Euerbach municipal administration. Please coordinate your visit with the municipal administration in advance. This lets you include this place of remembrance in your plans without assuming that you can visit spontaneously.
Passion Play Culture in Sömmersdorf
The Franconian Passion Plays take place every five years on the open-air stage in Münsterholz, in the Euerbach district of Sömmersdorf. As performances return at longer intervals, check the organiser’s programme for current dates when planning a visit. The PassionsGalerie offers a separate insight into the history of the stage: its permanent exhibition includes films of the Passion Plays, historical documents, posters, stage set designs and old costumes. The wooden cross from the first performance in 1933 has also been preserved. Photographs from the 1930s and the history of the Passion Play stage from 1933 to the present are also among the exhibition topics.
The Passion Garden in Sömmersdorf is designed as a quiet area with a permanent open-air exhibition on the history of religious theatre and the Sömmersdorf Passion Plays. The PassionWege trails around Sömmersdorf start at the PassionsGalerie. Another related site is the PassionsTor: a path of 15 stone slabs bears quotations from the Passion story and refers to the Passion of Jesus. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the Passion story—from the exhibition and trail to the open-air performance. For the gallery and performances, it is advisable to check current visiting information and event dates before your trip.
