Schonungen offers several distinct ways to explore the area: in Mainberg, castle history meets a historic village center, while cycling and hiking trails, connections to the water, and protected landscapes provide further highlights. When choosing where to stay, consider what you would like to focus on: culture and architecture, exploring routes, or experiencing nature. The places and paths in Schonungen offer different ways to do so.
Mainberg: Castle History and Village Character
Mainberg’s historic village center combines attractive half-timbered houses with Mainberg Castle to create a lovely setting. The castle is considered a landmark of the region and one of its most significant buildings, thanks to its architecture, history, and location. It is also known as the Franconian “Neuschwanstein Castle.” Its scale includes around 5,000 square meters of living space and 50 rooms; it is also one of the largest historic monuments in northern Bavaria.
St. Michael’s Church in Mainberg was built by Anton von Brun in 1486. The Small Pharmacy Museum offers a different focus: it shows how pharmacists individually prepared medicines before the advent of industrial mass production. Visits are available by appointment, including in combination with a visit to the pharmacy garden.
Routes on Foot, by Bike, and on the Water
The Main Cycle Route runs directly through the municipality of Schonungen. Schonungen also has a well-signposted network of cycling and hiking trails, with extensive walks and bike tours, including the Mill Trail and Apple Trail. The Three Valleys Trail runs from the Main Valley and Mainberg, the small suburb of Schweinfurt, through the Meerbach, Hausen, and Wollenbach valleys into the Schweinfurt Uplands. From the ridges between the valleys, it offers panoramic views of the Steigerwald, the HaĂźberge, and Thuringia, as well as the Main Valley. The distinction is clear when choosing a route: the Main Cycle Route passes through the municipality, while the Three Valleys Trail is defined by its three valleys and panoramic views from the ridges.
A boat landing stage at Schonungen’s AlbanPark provides access to the important Main waterway. With a landing stage in Mainberg, the municipality is also part of the “main wasserwandern” canoe trail. For orientation on the water, it is useful to distinguish between the two access points: the boat landing stage at AlbanPark and the landing stage in Mainberg, which is connected to the canoe trail.
Nature in Schonungen
The Habitats Directive and bird protection areas in the Schonungen bays on the left bank of the Main now form a nature refuge. The Reichelshof Nature and Environment Garden offers a different perspective on nature: children, young people, and adults can experience nature with all their senses and play an active role in shaping their environment sustainably. The bays represent protected landscapes, while the garden offers the chance to experience and help shape nature firsthand.
In the Wider Schweinfurt Destination
The wider Schweinfurt destination offers further opportunities to explore nature. Brönnhof was included in Germany’s National Natural Heritage on January 13, 2016; the former military training area covers 746 hectares. Brönnhof provides a habitat for protected species such as Bechstein’s bat and the great crested newt. Ellertshäuser Lake, in the north of Schweinfurt district, is also used as a recreational area.
