In Achslach, hiking trails differ not only in length, but also in elevation gain and route. The trails described range from 3 to 15 kilometers and from 70 to 500 meters of elevation gain. A short loop around Kirchberg is joined by longer routes through several named places. The Birkenbruchwald Oed nature reserve north of Achslach and St. James Parish Church offer further insights into the area’s nature and history.

Compare Hiking Trails by Distance and Elevation Gain

For the trails numbered 1, it is worth looking at each route. Marked Circular Hiking Trail No. 1 passes through Rimbeck, Bernwinkel, Zottling, Hofpoint, Kager and Aign before returning to Achslach. It is 12 kilometers long and has an elevation gain of 200 meters. This is distinct from Main Hiking Trail No. 1, which runs from Achslach via Vogelsang, Tafertsried, Bergheim, Hochweid, Klosterstein and Regensburger Stein to Kalteck. This route is listed as 10 kilometers long, with an elevation gain of 430 meters. The trail to Kalteck is therefore shorter but has a greater elevation gain, while the circular trail returns to Achslach.

There are also two different routes among the marked No. 3 trails. One loops around Kirchberg in Achslach; the route is listed as 3 kilometers long, with an elevation gain of 70 meters. A detour leads to the Mariengrotte. The other trail runs from Achslach via Hienhardt and Grün to Kalteck and covers 5 kilometers with an elevation gain of 200 meters. So, when choosing, the route, destination and distance are useful considerations in addition to the shared trail number.

There are also two marked options under No. 4. The “Höhenluft” trail runs from Achslach via Rimbeck and Zeitlhof. At 4 kilometers long with an elevation gain of 100 meters, its profile differs from that of the 15-kilometer route via Lindenau, Hirschenstein, Ödwies and Oed, which returns to Achslach and has an elevation gain of 500 meters. Conditions on the two No. 1 trails may change; check them before setting out.

Moorland North of Achslach

In the Birkenbruchwald Oed nature reserve, there are not only wet woodlands, but also raised bog, transition mire and fen communities, as well as alder swamp forests. The reserve lies north of Achslach. From the road, you can see its eastern part, with sparse bog birch forests. This offers another way to understand the area’s natural landscape through its different bog and wet woodland habitats.

A Historical Detail in the Parish Church

The reliquary of St. Hilarius is located on the right side altar in St. James Parish Church in Achslach. The church tower dates from the 15th century. The church thus brings together two specific historical points of reference: the reliquary as part of its furnishings and the tower as evidence of its architectural history.

Distinctive Topics in the Wider Regen Destination

The wider Regen destination also has its own cultural and natural highlights. The beer and ice cellars in the town of Regen are regularly presented on public guided tours as the historic “Regener Unterwelt” (Regen Underworld), with their history explained. There are also 13 terrain therapy trails in and around the town of Regen. The Grubhügel cross-country ski trail in Regen can be used for both skating and classic diagonal technique.

Natural highlights in the wider Regen destination include the quartz rocks near Weißenstein Castle ruins. They were placed under nature conservation in 1940 because of their geological significance. The Pfahl at Weißenstein is an important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor sites. These topics complement Achslach’s local hiking and nature highlights, while remaining distinct destinations within the wider Regen destination.
