Lindberg offers insights into rural architectural history at the Farmhouse Museum, opportunities to observe red deer at the enclosure near Scheuereck in different seasons, and hikes of varying lengths and routes.

Farmhouse Museum and Buchenau Castle

The Lindberg Farmhouse Museum features a main house built using timber construction, along with a retirement house. It was first mentioned in a document in 1575 and is probably older still. Together with one of the last wooden chapels in the Bavarian Forest, the house provides a picture of rural life in times past. The museum also includes a glass bell in the chapel tower and a collection of death boards.

Buchenau Castle offers a different historical reference point: it was built by Benedikt von Poschinger in 1840 and later extended. The dates refer to different events: 1575 is the first documented mention of the museum's main house, while 1840 is the year the castle was built. This places the two buildings in their historical context without treating the documented mention of the main house as its construction date.

Observe red deer near Scheuereck

During the summer months, a 300-metre-long hiking trail runs through the red deer enclosure near Scheuereck. Two viewing platforms with seating areas bring you close to the animals. This trail is closed during the rutting season and in winter. A covered observation pavilion at the winter feeding station offers the chance to watch red deer against a natural woodland backdrop, even in bad weather. If you specifically want to take the trail through the enclosure, factor in the rutting-season and winter closure when planning, and check access before your visit.

Choose hikes by route and length

The “Hiking by Train” hike starts at Lindberg Town Hall. It follows Kramerstraße and the panoramic circular trail, marked in red as route no. 14, to the Glaserhäuser in Theresienthal; from there, it follows the historic Böhmweg alongside the railway line to Ludwigsthal. The hike is about 12 km long as far as Bayerisch Eisenstein and has gentle inclines.

A shorter loop is “Through the Sea of Leaves in Lindberg”: this easy, 8 km circular hike goes around Riesberg near Lindberg. The shorter loop is described as easy, while the longer hike has gentle inclines. This lets you consider route length and terrain descriptions separately when choosing.

Wildlife Open-Air Enclosure and Wilderness Camp

In Ludwigsthal, a circular trail through the wildlife open-air enclosure, with three naturalistic enclosures for lynx, wolves, aurochs and wild horses, leads to the Haus zur Wildnis. The Haus zur Wildnis is also the starting point for various themed hikes. At the Wilderness Camp on Falkenstein, children and young people experience a five-day wilderness week in themed cabins.

More to explore in the wider Regen travel destination

The wider Regen travel destination offers further cultural and natural highlights. In the town of Regen, the beer and ice cellars are regularly presented on public guided tours as the historic “Regener Underworld”; their history is explained as part of the tour. The quartz rocks near the ruins of Weißenstein Castle were placed under nature protection as early as 1940 because of their geological significance. The rock ridge near Weißenstein is an important habitat for rare heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species adapted to nutrient-poor sites.

There are also plenty of ways to stay active in the wider Regen travel destination: 13 terrain therapy trails lie in and around the town of Regen. The beer-themed hiking trail is about 5 km long, with almost half the route running directly along the Regen River. Both skating and diagonal techniques are possible on the GrubhĂĽgel cross-country ski trail in Regen. Ice skates and equipment can be rented on site at the Regen Ice Sports Centre.
