Thannhausen brings together several different attractions for a stay: Baroque church art, an art trail through the town and water sports at the Turncable Wakepark. For planning, it helps to distinguish between historic buildings, a town walk and activities whose visiting hours or event dates you should check in advance.
Church Art and Town History
The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1742 by Thannhausen church architect Johann Kaspar Radmiller. Its Baroque hall brings together several artistic contributions: frescoes by J. Christ, alternating main altar paintings by Franz Xaver Abele, side altar paintings by Konrad Huber, a painting of the Crucifixion by L. Hundertpfund and choir stalls by Thannhausen cabinetmaker Ferdinand Zech. The furnishings can be explored through a range of works and their creators, rather than focusing on a single work of art.
St. Leonhard’s Chapel at the eastern entrance to the town is one of the oldest buildings in the town and dates from around 1600. It therefore represents an earlier building period than the parish church, built in 1742. Anyone wishing to place Thannhausen’s architectural history in chronological context will find different historical reference points in these two religious buildings.
The monument to Christoph von Schmid, created by F. Miller, has stood in the square in front of the town hall since 1901. From 1796 to 1816, Schmid worked in Thannhausen as a writer, benefice holder and school director, and wrote “Ostereier” and “Ihr Kinderlein kommet”. Here, the monument, location and biography are closely connected: the work commemorates someone who was active in the town for many years.
The local history association established a town museum in the listed Tuchmacherhaus, using exhibits collected over many years. In 1987, the town made the building available to the association for setting up a local history museum. If you are planning a museum visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance. The former courthouse at Dr.-Georg-und-Lu-Zimmermann-Platz offers another glimpse into the past: it dates from 1673 and has a Baroque gable designed by Kaspar Radmiller. The beer fountain, designed by Thannhausen architect and town councillor Monika WiesmĂĽller-Schwab, also stands in the square. It is the only drinking-water fountain in the town of Mindel.
Art Trail and Activities
The Brenninger Trail combines an art theme with a town walk: the route runs through Thannhausen, follows the works of sculptor Georg Brenninger and comprises twelve stops in total. If you would like to explore art in public spaces not just at a single monument, but as part of a walk, this trail is one clearly defined option. Its twelve stops give the walk a clear structure, with Brenninger’s works at its heart.
The Turncable Wakepark in Thannhausen offers a different kind of activity, with wakeboarding and water skiing available. If you are planning a visit to the Wakepark, check current operating and visitor information in advance. There is also a Flexibus stop at Turncable: Thannhausen No. 1 “Wakeboard”. If you plan to travel by Flexibus, check the current services.
Cultural events at the open-air stage in Burg follow their own schedule: Burgstalltheater Burg e.V. stages a new production there every few years. Plan a theatre visit around announced dates, rather than expecting a programme that is available every day. Along with the buildings, Brenninger Trail and Wakepark, this gives you a range of different options to include in your trip, depending on your interests.
